You have motivated me...

Hi all, I am a pencil artist but I love the contrast of the scratchboard art. I am ready to give it a try. This is my dog Ace and I figure he will make a good subject for me. Which pic should I use?

thanks for being there for me .

Re: You have motivated me...

Beautiful dog and his name is too cool
I'd go for the second one. I like the lighting and the pose better than the first

Handsome dog! I too like the second photo better. I will "warn" you that white animals are more tricky than darker ones and need lots and lots of scratches. Not trying to scare you away from him as a subject matter, just mentioning this fact.

Re: You have motivated me...

I was also leaning towards the second one. I've been doing graphite work for many, many years and going dark enough has never been a problem for me. With this I'll have to learn to go white enough. I'm ready for a new challenge and find myself lurking on this channel a lot because I love what you all do. I will watch a few tutorial before I get started.

Yes he is a great dog. We just got back from a nice long walk to the dog park..his two favorite things to do, go for a walk and visit his friends at the park.

Beautiful dog. I would go for the second one, the full head shot. You can always increase the contrast if you want. You have lot of values in there, very subtle ones you'll need to get. I'd practice scratching different values on a practice board before tackling the real thing.

Handsome boy! I vote for the second one as well. This will be challenging one due to the amount of white and minimal contrast, but you should go for it. It will be a powerful drawing and will be very striking on a black board!

Just for grins, I adjusted the photo to see what it would look like brighter and with more contrast.

Re: You have motivated me...

I have scatchboards to play with. I have plenty of time so I'm not in any hurry. I like the adjustments, I'll play with the contrasts before I print it out. I've done animals with pencils so I'm not worried about the "drawing" part. Nancy you are right, I will play for a day or two to get different values. It helps that I love my subject. When I've done portraits of my kids they always turn out the best.

Thanks for the advice. I will post my progress pics along the way.

Re: You have motivated me...

Welcome Danna! Your dog Ace is gorgeous, I prefer your second photo as well, it shows quite a bit of shading. With a gentle touch you can create the shadows and contours of his beautiful face. It will be a challenge, but this can turn out to be a stunning scratchboard.

Re: You have motivated me...

I'm currently working on a Spanish Water Dog for a commission.A LOT of curly white fur there! A woman with a bichon friese wants to commission me to do her dog as well. I much prefer doing that kind of dog with pencils. I have no idea how to get really curlyque hair with a knife.

Danna - you'll do an amazing job on your dog, I have no doubt!

I opt for the second one too, have fun and you can always re-ink for needed contrast. I look forward to seeing your first scratching. Welcome to the dark side. The minute you start, we've got you!
