Re: February 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Hibiscus

Palette.
I was going to do a purple shadow under painting, but decided to do an under painting of Holbein Opera, then contour and shading with cad red light, and shadow with French ultramarine.

The stamen is lemon yellow mixed with cad red light, and deepened on the poof with raw umber and a hint of burnt sienna. The deepest part of the center is enhanced witha bit of payees grey.

The background is cascade green (dansmith) and ultramarine. The leaves are simply lifted out.

I used my basic, always on the studio table, 6 colour palette, then just added the cascade green and opera.

I just noticed the giant post I did just before the great crash on the iPad with comments on other painting is missing! D'oh! I'll try to restyle that later today.

Doug, I really enjoy reading through your Challenges each month. All of those who participate do such beautiful work! It's so much fun to see how each Artist approaches your chosen reference.

I completely ruined a small painting that I had been working on and did not have the heart to begin again. So, I decided to give your hibiscus a try. Here it is, on the very last day of the month! It's just an 8x10 gallery wrap, 140# Saunders Waterford cp, DaVinci paints...

Mine is going to be a little late because I got stuck at the sketch waiting for my order of masking fluid. Hope that's ok.

Great job everyone!

Re: February 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Hibiscus

Good Morning,
Mike: I love your hibiscus. It's so fluffy and I love the colors of petals, leaves and background. Especially the greens.

Caryl: thanks a lot for your detailled explanation! Helps a lot...

Char: oh my, such a wonderful hibiscus, cannot believe it. Love the colors, shadows, the curved forms (I think that topic "curved forms" is a kind of February nightmare for me still trying that out ) and the background!

Thanks all for showing your works, it's so interesting and educational to see the different interpretations of color / shadows/ backgrounds on one ref photo!

Wishing everybody a wonderful Friday

I look forward to seeing it. Welcome to the forum.

Best to upload rather than attach your picture by the way. Attached pictures always appear at the end of your post.

Re: February 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Hibiscus

Since this is my first post in this forum I'm not allowed to attach my imagefile here yet. It will be shown in my third post. It's a pleasure to see what other people have made and that so many different results can be admired. Thank you Yorky

Re: February 2013 Watercolor Challenge - Hibiscus

I started painting last december and I'm still learning a lot about watercolor. I made also the challenge with the canoo(misty morning). Maybe I'll show it some other time.
