Talking flute player

From a photo I took at a music festival a few years ago- a partner to the guitar girl. here
They were actually a duet, but I liked their individual shots better.
alla prima oil on canvas 40cm x 30cm (16" x 12")

The challenges with this were
- to delete a microphone which covered the left half of her face- so I had to use other photos to check the face.
- change the background from the bright reds and yellows on the right.
... and getting the warm and cool light, of course.
Comments welcome...
Thanks for looking!

Re: flute player

I do like how you've treated the hands and face Bethany, it's a painting that actually expresses something... I'm not sure about the highlight on the cheek that appears to distort the face?

Ha! That made me laugh, Miss S! Thank you for the great positive comment!

Thanks for taking a look, Mac.
That highlight is something I toned down a lot- it is a strong white in the photo. I will check it again. The left side is the one I had to invent- so maybe I didn't match it well enough.

Miss Beth

I think you've done marvelous and I luv the concept. It tells a story!
The face arms hands are all wonderful.

If anything to me possibly the hard line and value change on bottom left-- draws my eye-- I wonder if some gradation of background. There would work

But this is minor -- the art is superb!

Re: flute player

I like this! Good feedback from folks! It reminds me of Craig Nelson and some of his musician paintings. Good work!

Re: flute player

Yeah I like the part about how the painting really conveys that the subject is engaged in playing the flute and I love her gesture. I'm thinking that the bottom half of the painting is having a hard time supporting the weight of the top half though.

Re: flute player

I love this--especially the hands and the distant concentration in the eyes.

Thank you for posting.

Re: flute player

Thank you for your support, Miss Carol- too kind!
I did change that area's colours from the photo- because she is standing in front of a black curtain, and I wanted the dress to be seen. I will look again at that area.

Wow, Sir K- high praise from you- so glad you see some progress! Thanks for the encouragement.

Thank you for the considered comments, Loren. I appreciate your thoughts. I must say I spent much concentration on the face (even scraped it off at one point) - that the bottom area didn't get much attention.

Carol, thanks for taking a look at the painting- much appreciated!

Re: flute player

This is wonderful, Bethany. Even though the flute is a strong line that continues to the edge of the painting, it is softened at the edge and the rest of the design keeps the viewer engaged. I love her left hand and the fact that I can see up her sleeve a little bit. What a great painting.

Re: flute player

I like it! A nice pose rendered with accuracy. There is no mistaking she is blowing to the flute, a tough one to pull off in my books. The finger rendering also adds to it. I also like her body arcing slightly towards *our* left all so gently. Adds to the wind-y nature of the music, like trees lilting and swaying to the winds.
