Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Thank you for your comment Kevin. You make me thinking here. The first block in took only a few minutes (45 minutes for each drawing of the three). The rest I tried to correct and make it look like the model. I think I begin to understand what is me going on here ... thanks to your help
Your C&C is always helpful, thank you very very much ! Tomorrow I will try again, with a big note on the easel to be more careful at the start !

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Here is todays practice. The likeness is better than with the ones before of this model I think, but not as good as I'd like it to be. The contrast is a little too high though, and even more so in the photo, I have not found a way yet to photograph drawings without the more subtle shadings vanish in the photo. But in real life it is a little too much contrast as well I think. I also think I have the reflected light in the shadows a bit too light ? I also think the hair/head to our right side should be a little higher ? I should more think about construction of the scull and always keep in mind what is under the hair ? Especially when the model is moving a little, which they all do (some more some less), I find it hard to keep the whole thing consistent. I'm working my way through the Loomis book now (thanks for that Tip Kevin) and will not have as many models here like in the last two weeks to study about the construction of the head more. If only the day had more hours
It is a tighter drawing, I would like to learn how draw more lose. I want to have a good likeness but still a lose look. Much to learn in the years to come.
It is willow charcoal on rather smooth paper. The paper is actually quite white, but I have been drawing under only a 60W bulb and made the photo under that same bulb. For color work I use a fluorescent tube, but in my tiny room that takes away a lot from the deep shadows, so with drawing, where color does not matter, I now use a dim light so I have nice shadows and still can see what I'm doing on the paper. About 2 1/2 hours.
This is a picture of the current setup, in case anyone is interested:
C&C always welcome.

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Today's model is one of my favourite ones and I have painted and drawing her before.
Here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/show...2&postcount=11
An these, not posted before (I believe):
These last two are from mid June 2012.
This is the one from today, about 5 1/2 hours working time:

Here is a High-Resolution: http://dustonpaper.smugmug.com/Art/Paintings/18536465_V6RV7b#!i=2019307915&k=wQLjwwb&lb=1&s=O
It looks a little different in real life, the camera still does not do what I want it to do.

I just found a photo of one I was going while I was not visiting WC which might be interesting to see if there is progress and to get comments what still the main mistakes are, bad habits I have to get rid of etc.. It is from my very first oil portrait from life, on Feb. 19th 2012. (so the Feb. 19th 2012 was the day I began to really learn to paint):
And the same model mid June 2012, so already a while ago:

Some more of the ones from the last 2 months when I was not at WC for C&C is someone is interested. They are no good , but for some strange reason they are 3 of my favourite ones to look at ... (my stuff are all taped to the walls so I can look all the time at them analyze them). OK, enough useless babble, here are the 3 ones I meant from Mid June 2012, they are all about 2h45m studies:
C&C always welcome.

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
What is standing out to me (apart from your sheer dedication to your craft!) is the more subtle colour choices- and the cohesive and accurate shapes you have now. Great to see the progress!

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Bethany, thank you very very much for your comment. Which is like all your comments always very encouraging.
Today I painted a dark black for the second time. It was very different and difficult as well. Size is about 14x11 inch. Time was about 2h45min ... not quite finished. There was a stage inbetween though, when parts of the painting looked better than they look now. But that happens often, that I work on parts and they lose some impact. I guess with experience I will figure that out. Also the photo makes the colors look a little different, I still need to figure out the white balance stuff I think.

The first time I painted a black model was about 8 weeks ago:
I have quite some trouble with matching the colors and turning the forms. I'm just guessing that in this case much careful handling of color temperature must be done ? Like her nose, the upper nose is not there in my painting.
But it is a lot of fun to paint.
C&C always welcome.

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
It did not go that well today. I tried a new light setup (more from the top) and experimented a bit with edges and paint handling and warm/cool stuff for turning the forms. Not really successful, need to figure out and understand more. But fun to paint all day .
30x40cm oil on canvas. Working time about 5 hours.

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
hi,
just a couple of simple things:
I think the dark patch between her right eye and the nose is too dark. I read somewhere that if you make the nostrils too dark, it can look like a hole in the face, and I think this is the same issue here, it could look a little like there is a hole in her head.
Also, the hair on the top of the head should probably be lighter since it is getting so much light? Possibly there would be the same effect on the eyebrows, where, because they are not flat ribbons but 3d objects that jut out, their top surface would be lighter and the bottom surface in shadow?
The highlight on the forehead looks good to me - natural in colour and natural in the way it blends in with the rest of the forehead,

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Vielen Dank Ernst, tolle webseite hast Du, könnte mir vorstellen mal einen Kurs bei Dir zu machen, mit Aquarell habe ich noch nie viel gearbeitet und finde es sehr schwer !
Andrew - Thank you a lot for your comment. Yes, absolutely right what you said. The dark spot I might change when the model is here again and I have her skin colors mixed. The hair on the top of the head should have lighter reflections as well as the eye brows I think. Thank you !

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Here is todays practice ... 30x40 cm , about 5 1/2 hour working time. The photo is not very good it looks quite different in real, nor is the painting much good . I have to find ways to change my style. It is getting too detailed for my taste.

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Here are the last two practice studies.
This one is from yesterday, 30x40cm, I think it is quite bad, I was so unhappy with it that I was about to scrape it off after the model left, but I kept it. The photo has a lot of glare, it looks worse in real:

High Resolution: http://dustonpaper.smugmug.com/Art/P...mhRhm&lb=1&s=O
And here is a charcoal from today, 2 1/2 hours, all willow charcoal, 24x18 inch. I tried a new paper first today which I think is widely used in the USA, Strathmore medium 400 paper. I really really like that paper but it is hard to get here and quite expensive. If somebody knows a good source for it in Germany, please let me know. I had to order it from the UK. Since I work only with charcoal, the paper is very important to get the effects done and this paper seems not to get filled up its stuff so quickly. I draw a lot with the finger in these charcoals, and this paper seems to be perfect for that.
http://dustonpaper.smugmug.com/Art/P...rPNMM&lb=1&s=O
Even though that model moves quite a bit I like to draw her. She has many faces, sometimes she looks so young, then she looks old, another time very masculine. I think in the drawing there are quite some mistakes, like with the values and also with placement and the shadow structure is wrong I think, like the darks should be more to the left side and not so dark at her right upper side of the head where that bone above the eye comes it it much too sharp and to dark I guess.
C&C always welcome.

Hi Sascha, you really are making terrific progress since I last looked into this thread, working as you are is paying off big time.
An inspiration we would do well to follow, Dave

Re: Practice from live model thread - 2012
Sandra - thank you so much for your comments which make me feel very good. I'm very glad you like the portraits.
Dave - thank you very much and thank you for seeing progress. Sorry that I'm not often posting at your or other threads. I'm always so busy.
I have not posted much these last 2 weeks, money for models is kind of running short again, can't wait for the next paycheck to have models more often again. I still practice when I have no model, but other stuff I don't get to usually, for example I'm doing color charts now or practice the Loomis methods or just read books on painting (mainly Loomis at the moment).
But today I really needed to work from model again so I had a model here which I have been drawing and painting often and like to do so.
She thaought I might be bored with my usual blue background, which she is totally right, so she brought a cloth from her country of origin (Vietnam) with all kind of flower-patterns and such. I really enjoyed that backdrop and now have a look out to get a lot of different backdrops to get some fresh air to my practice.
It is 18x24 inch, natural willow charcoal only:

High Resolution:

A close up of the face:
http://dustonpaper.smugmug.com/Art/P...SPbR4&lb=1&s=O
I find it very difficult to get the charcoals photographed properly. There is a lot of stuff the camera does not show well, all the more subtle shadings get lost for some reason.
There sure are a bunch of drawing errors in it. But still I like the result, probably because of the whole new world another backdrop brings, because I really started to get tired of that light blue background and single color backgrounds in general. Much more fun with a little life behind the model to play around with.
C&C always welcome.
