Hawaiian Hibiscus x post colored pencil

This is my latest colored pencil 'painting.' It is 8" x 10", done on Stonehenge white paper with Prismacolor pencils. Comments and critiques welcomed and encouraged.

Really beautiful, Linda. Both the flower and the split leaves are awsome. You can sure achieve incredible detail with colored pencil. Love it!

Re: Hawaiian Hibiscus x post colored pencil

Thanks for your comments and for taking time to look and respond, Carol and Ron.

Does anyone know what the green plant with the yellow bumps (scientific description, huh?) is called? I'd sure like to know.

Linda

Re: Hawaiian Hibiscus x post colored pencil

The Hawaiian name for your leaves is "Laua'e Fern" which is pronounced Lah-oo-ah-aye. To my knowledge, they are only found in the Hawaiian Islands and are often used to create both head leis and woven rope lies for the Hula. Though they are often mentioned in Hawaiian Folklore, they were not recognized or given a scientific name by Botanists until the 1920s. Hope this helps.

Ron,
You are the best! Thank you so much for naming the fern. I spent some time on the internet this afternoon searching but couldn't figure it out on my own. So, I would not have known without your help. Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

Linda

Re: Hawaiian Hibiscus x post colored pencil

extremely different leaves alright, they add nice interest to the background/setting. Wonderful work Linda, I LOVE Hibiscus, great greens etc. My only comment would be if you ever wanted to make those stamens the focus, lose the leaf behind it, however I am guessing your focus is the centre of the flower cos that's where I get drawn to... (you prob know all this )

Wonderful attention to detail! Isn't WC great where you can get advice on artistic endeavors and information on the plants themselves!
