Drilling holes will let the nylon line stay at one place. Otherwise, cut or saw notches at the sides for the same purpose.

These Ikea wood are softwood. Holes can easily be drilled using a electric drill.

By the way, a portable electric drill is very handly to have around the house. It can also be used as a powered screw-driver. Turning screws manually can be tiring on the muscles after a while.

Re: I'm Building a painting storage rack

Doris you don't need your hubby to do this by yourself. It is better if you have 2 people but can be done by one.

I did drill for the the fishing line but I am a tool freak so I used my drill press.
Even putting in the screws for the sides are easy.
I am still blown away by the function of this design.

Re: I'm Building a painting storage rack

While surfing around the web, I notice this artist showing his/her studio with a drying/storage rack that looks similar to mine, picture taken from here.

The artist says, "My canvases (painted and blank) are stored on a set of wooden, screw-together shelves bought from a DIY store."

wow I haven't been on here in awhile. The only thing I would change or add is a space for new canvases. I have no room for them right now...

My stretched canvas racks are filling up. I also have to build another one soon.

Re: I'm Building a painting storage rack

I've been looking for ideas to make a rack to store wet oil paintings in my studio and the best solution I had thought of was to use GORM wine rack shelves and uprights from the IKEA range. I haven't had it built yet, but I'm sure it will work well, and be quick and cheap to do too. Then I found this thread, with the same idea actually put into practice! It looks brilliant, and thank you Merlion for working out all the details! I can't wait to get some made! They will work just as well for wet or dry, framed or unframed canvasses, and also for storing framed watercolours. Brilliant.

Thumbs up Re: I'm Building a painting storage rack

Hello Dave,
Your storage rack is perfect. I have been trying to find something workable for ages now. This should assist in keeping my finished work out of harm's way in my tiny basement studio. Tricky when much of my work is on a larger scale.
Approximately what are the dimensions of your construct and how many canvases does it hold. It looks like plenty. Thank you so much. Picasso123

We already had a trip to Ikea planned for tomorrow. Great timing to find this thread tonight! Thanks for all the tips and pics. I'm out of space!

Re: I'm Building a painting storage rack

Dave I like you concept but I would change a few things if anyone is going to build this unit. The screw going into the end of the 2x2 are extremely a weak joint. You should use mortise an tenon or at the very least a half lap joint. My first passion is wood working and have a complete wood shop. Screwing into the end of a board is like screwing into the end of a paint brush. Hope this helps.

Re: I'm Building a painting storage rack

Back in here because I realized with my new website, the images were gone. Seem to be back up now.

Great tip Willy d, thanks! Also, Picasso123 I'm sure you made it by now but let me know if you still need dimensions. Really just do whatever fits your space.

I wish my studio still looked like those earlier pics!
