Re: KIUAN Exercise 17 — Draw! Wash! and Ink!

Combining Sylvia's KIUAN and Doug's Monthly Challange. Sorry about the cell phone photos. A broad selection of hashmarks, doodles, squiggles, dots, and swooshes. It looks MUCH nicer in person! I swear!

Gorgeous work, Caryl! I'd consider this a finished painting, something I've never had the courage to do in pen and wash!

Caryl,
I agree with Char, this is definitely a finished painting, not a sketch. Lovely work on the water and the pen strokes enhance the painting beautifully.

Clever you combining the two events.

Sylvia

Brilliant idea combining the two events, Caryl, and a brilliant rendering of the subject.
Congratulations!
Bev
PS: I'd have your painting hanging on my wall in a heartbeat! I's gorgeous !

Re: KIUAN Exercise 17 — Draw! Wash! and Ink!

Caryl, that is a gorgeous painting!!!!! The pen/ink and paint come together beautifully!!

Daggers, you are one heck of a draftsman, LOVE your jeep!!

Bev, that turned out really nice!!

Char, you bunny cards are very cute and your instructions wonderful - thank you!!

I can't see the previous page to respond to but remember there were beautiful works including Sylvia's bridge.

I did some rough sketches in the park the other day but haven't put the paint on it yet but it will be VERY ROUGH in comparison to what I see here

Re: KIUAN Exercise 17 — Draw! Wash! and Ink!

Well, I inked my painted image this morning trying to follow Ona's excellent tutorial on inking. I'm afraid I got a bit heavy handed though with the ink. I need to remember Mies van der Rohe's adage: Less is more! when I use ink in the future.

Here is the painted image again:

and here is the finished picture with ink added:

I also dug through my files from last year and found another example of one of my Memory paintings as Char called them (love that title, Char). This is a house in the Italian town of Herculaneum which was destroyed along with Pompeii in the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius:

Think I'll try one of Char's splash and drip and ink flowers next.

OCD and sketching don't go together.... LOL. but thank you.

Will try another today more sketchy.

Char, I still have the card you sent me of flowers sitting on top of my pigment box so I can see it all the time

Caryl,
A finished painting is a lovely accomplishment. It doesn't have to be a sketchy picture. They are lovely as well, but either one works with the technique.

Well done Sylvia. One rule I have is no ink in the sky.

Thanks, Doug. I think that is a rule I will follow in the future. I tried doing it the way Ona showed, but mine is heavy where her's is light and airy.

Re: KIUAN Exercise 17 — Draw! Wash! and Ink!

Hi everyone,

I've only just managed to grab a moment to come here and check out all your great work Mad life I lead at the moment... I'm not complaining though

You can paint first and ink after or you can ink first and washover after or you can be much more dynamic and alternate. It really doesnt matter. Do what works for you. The most important thing is to have fun with it and practice those drawing skills.

Try also inking and just adding a touch of colour somewhere key.. you can get a great effect or mostly do just watercolour and pen in just a certain area. It doesnt have to be all of both everywhere.

Keep up the good work

Ona

Some lovely work and examples on this thread and it is inspiring.

Thank you, but I have no excuse as I was a draughtsman for 15 years back in the 60/70's.

Agree with Yorky, no ink in the sky unless absolutely necessary, same goes for steam.

However that said you can compromise by tilting your pen (if you have the right type) over much more so that it gives a more hit and miss line and much thinner/fainter line.

Here is a scanned in photo of my ink only sketch for somebody I did nearly 20 years ago to show steam/smoke above the engine if you can see it:

Super engine sketch David.

Takes me back 60 years to my childhood when I lived near a busy rail line with LMS and LNER steam trains passing all day long. I can still hear the noise of the wagons shunting in the early morning serving the local colliery.
