Haha I wish I had 30 hours. I probably put about 10 hours into it if that. With working 9 days in a row and this I couldn't set time aside like I wanted. I wish I could have put 30 hours though, the piece would be sooo much better if I had. Thank you though. You're recent sketch of a cow is cool. I like it.

Tirtha, that Marilyn sketch is very good and your landscapes really are beautiful. I hope that I could paint beautiful things like that some day.

Tirtha, you gave her superb hair and necklace details and there's a great likeness to her too. Very nice.

Jake, your girl looks very Japanese!! Neat.

Some doodles.

Classic Cachet 5x7 inch sketchbook black

Derwent Pastel pencils and Cretacolor Nero pencil

It is so troublesome to use pastel pencils. It smudged all over before I could scan it and I had to redo it all over for scanning.

Prisma Verithin and Koh I Noor Woodless Progresso colored pencils

Prismacolor Portrait set

Caran D'ache Neocolor I Metalic crayons

Kimberly watercolor pencils and Koh I Noor Progresso woodless colored pencils

Faber Castell Albrecht Durer watercolor pencil. This is my favorite piece today.

Outline is with Faber Castell Polychromos black colored pencil.

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 12

Here are more faces.

The first on left has Prismacolor and Pitt Artist big brush marker.
The second is Koh I Noor Woodless Colored pencil.
The third one has all of the above and a Shinhan marker blender to blend the colored pencil.

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 12

Here is an experiment of mine. The right one is a George Inness copy for A to Z - George Inness .

Holbein oil pastel with solvent on a small canvas of 2 x 4 inch and it has a depth of 3/8 inch.

The left one is a comparison. The monkey was from last month's Photo paint along and it's done with Derwent Drawing Collection and Koh I Noor Woodless Progresso colored pencils on the same size of canvas with solvent.

The colored pencil one is slightly easier with fine details.

To achieve the trees fine white trunks in the oil pastel piece, I used Shinhan marker colorless blender which lifts the colors with a fine tip. It has a broad tip on the other end.

Added Shinhan markers to the ape and promptly destroyed the piece.

Testing the Prismacolor artstics and Koh I noor Progresso woodless pencil vs the Derwent drawing collection artstick.

I would say the Derwent drawing collection is the softest, Prisma the most vibrant and Koh I Noor is right in between.

After washing with solvent, added more of each.

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 12

Practicing quick sketches of faces today from face expression book.

From left to right, top to bottom

Caran D'ache Supra colored pencil (watersoluable)
Caran D'ache Pablo olive yellow
Both of these are very soft and good for sketching.

Prisma Verithin black
Prisma Col-Erase Tuscan red
I particularly like them being sharp and pointed for a long long time. Good details.

Koh I Noor Progresso red colored pencil woodless - amazing rich colors and as soft as prisma really.
Caran D'ache metallic blue neocolor I crayon - high coverage though less details

Left one is Derwent watercolor pencil and right one is Derwent Inktense pencil. Ok on textured surface.

Walnut ink for the first three and the last one, I had an idea to mix Derivian sepia liquid pencil with Bombay India ink blue. It looks decent.

One more

This one is portraying a dancer from Wonder Girls here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZBn1e9pr2Q

Prismcolor pencil and Caran D'ache metallic neocolor I on fabriano artist journal 7x9 inch

I was testing my Koh I Noor Progresso colored pencils woodless once more on black and the more I use it, the more I like it. It covers the black so well.

Classic Cachet 5x7 inch black sketchbook

Right lion has Uniball white gel pen.

Then on the next page, some more tests. The first baby elephant has white fur on its body as outline and this Koh I Noor colored pencil is so opaque it could cover it after 2 more layers. It's not perfect blend but one could see the possibilities.

Sandra, Love today's selection of sketches & info. The animals & face on black paper are super. Really like the dancing lady with the shoe reflected on the shiny floor.

When you use solvent do you use turp or mineral spirits? Or have a preference? Is odorless a given? Also, when you use the India ink, what do you wash your brush/tools in- soap won't work will it??

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 12

Thank you, Candace.

I use either Grumbacher's odorless pretested thinner (art store) or Daler Rowney low odor thinner (Walmart sells this one.) Rubbing alcohol doesn't work as well and it smells bad. I got a bottle of Winsor & Newton oil color sansodor and it stinks. I'm not even going to use that.

When I use India ink, I swish it in water right afterwards and so far I haven't had problems with my brushes. (I use only cheap brushes for India ink.) If you think the India ink is going to stick, use these thinner to clean it. At that point, rubbing alcohol also works. If it is on a dip pen, I use Dr. Ph Martin's pen cleaner which is made for cleaning these India ink on nips.

Re: All Media On-Going Sketching Thread Part 12

Academie Heavyweight 80 lb 8.5 x 11 inch sketchbook

This one first started off with cheap watercolor, then I added Portfolio oil pastels and then Conte crayon. Conte crayon doesn't really have the color and concentration of pigment as pan pastel. Should have just stuck with watercolor all the way.

Some Derwent watercolor pencil details.

This one started off with Portfolio watersoluable oil pastel on the top half of the page and wash and I was wondering what I was doing wasting time. Just use the simple watercolor palette to paint. Why use watersoluable anyway.

Then I did the bird with same Portfolio oil pastel and after washing, the colors were just too muted. Added Chinese brush and sumi ink.

Lesson learnt. Stay away from watersoluble when there's watercolor.

This one I thought was going to be trashed like the first one I did just before. But I persisted.

Bruzyneel colored pencil.
Then added Koh I noor Progresso woodless pencil and Nero pencil
For the background, I used pan pastel. Use the wipe out tool to clean up the bird's feathers from the pastel and spray fixative.

Classic Cachet 5x7 inch black sketchbook

Faber Castell Polychromos colored pencils

This one is with Derwent Watercolor and Derwent Inktense pencils. Too much work. It's so scratchy and hard and sticky a pencil, both of them.

Above animals from animal photo library in animal forum.

Joe, what a huge panel! I bet everyone comes to your restaurant and comment on how creative the menu/board looks like and look for the artist behind it and you could say smugly, "I did it. Want me to do yours? " Nice one. I like the Virgo's half off first drink. I'm a Virgo too. Do you check ID's? LOL.
