Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Gorgeous painting, Pippa! I find I can't stop staring at it. I'm entranced by the play of colors in the shadows. I've only done two pictures with the Pans and I can't seem to get the crisp edges or fine details like you do. Care to share any secrets?

Pippa love the peppers. Nice use of the pan pastels. Did you use any other pastels?

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Pippa, your peppers are impressive! love the shine/textures. Wonderful job.

Sorry, I haven't been around much recently, but have finally had time to do a small project for the July Virtual Paintout (Thailand). Since there is so little activity in this forum lately and I have trouble even finding it myself when I look for it, I have posted mine in the regular pastel forum ... http://www.wetcanvas.com/forums/show....php?t=1188852
Would love any comments or advice. Thanks !

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Hi all,

I am a watercolor hobby painter, bought a landscape set of PP in germany earlier this year, yet had not so many opportunities to test them.
Yesterday, I found a watercolor painting I did for a year ago, it looked terrible (that time I found it OK...). So I thought I will test my pans, and covered almost the whole sheet with pan pastels. This is the starting situation:

and that's how it looks now, as PP version

all advice, comments and critics welcome!

This was done on 11x14 Stratmore Pastel paper 80 lb in Panpastel. I've only done a few paintings in Pans so far so relatively new. I did this as a paintalong with Johannes. He was using oils so I had to improvise some.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Lots of nice work in here. And I've officially been enabled. [sigh]

I work without blending, and am not particularly fond of smooth, wash-like effects, so I have trouble imagining using PanPastel for anything other than underpainting. Having said that, I just ordered the "Drawing set of 10," because I'm imagining some wonderful portrait possibilities.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Raxu, wonderful work in both mediums - - do not understand what you found terrible about your watercolor piece, it is vibrant & lovely as is the pastel. So in my opinion, just continue what you are doing, as the feeling urges you to choose your style.

Lori Anne, good job on the landscape. It can be difficult adjusting for the difference from oils to pastels, I know. Johannes really seems to love the pastels, so maybe you will be able to paint along with them also.

Graphica, welcome to Show & Tell. Hope you will join in and share your work with us. The pans work really well in conjunction with the regular pastel sticks & pencils. So, I hope you will not feel limited in your use, I believe they were not meant as a stand-alone medium when first introduced, but I find them fairly versatile.

I have been out of town for some time and away from all my supplies, back now and wanted to share the pan pastel I did for the July Plant Parade in the floral/botanical forum. 9x13 on AS colourfix.

Waterlily
(great thanks for the ref from RIL by Lady Carol)

Beautifule Linettalee. I've only done landscapes with my pans which is what i am trying to learn now. I need to try a still life or floral in my pans. Time to step out of the box.

thank you so much LA. I am really enjoying using the pans, whether almost exclusively like in this waterlily piece or in combination with sticks or other mediums.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Hello all - I'm pretty new to the forum, pans, and aceo's. I started into artwork years ago, got accepted at the Art Institute in Chicago, but ended up going a different career route - became disabled by a car accident and am back where I started.

I hated - absolutely hated my pans at first. Got them last year for a combined birthday Christmas present. I started getting the hang of them after attending some of Johannes V.'s lessons. Then - suddenly it took off. I do mostly ACEO's and am loving it. Guess I'm looking for Pan fans - and aceo folks here. I'd like a place to share successes and failures, etc.

If I can figure out how to post an image, I'll show one of my ACEO's. I'm kind of a waterfall fan right now.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Deni, Welcome, glad you found this forum we need more activity here. Your waterfall is terrific, great movement. Hard to believe that it is that small. I am also pretty new to pans and pastel in general, so am just feeling my way each time. But, I luv the way the pans go on & the soft blending you can achieve, especially for bgs. Have done several pieces with just pans, but some times they are better in combination with sticks depending on the subject, I think. Thanks for joining our forum, please let us see more of your work.

Re: PANPASTEL SHOW AND TELL--instructions and inspiration

Linettalee - Thanks for the welcome! I'm hoping pans are popular enough to be around for quite a while! I have used them with sticks or pencils at times, but I love the softness of just the pans. I'm kind of feeling my way around here, seeing what all there is and trying to learn at the same time. I've been flying solo pretty much with my artwork and felt it was time to connect with others with the same passion.

Just a quick PanPastel 'sketch' that I did in my art journal. The paper was primed with Golden Pastel Ground. I added some close up pictures to see the beautiful texture it gives. It was completed using the Painters' Set of PanPastels

Your paintings are all so inspiring. My New Year's resolution for this year will be to paint more with my Pan Pastels. Happy New Year All and happy Painting.

Hello I have been away from the forum for a while but recently started painting with my pan pastels. Here are 2 that I submitted to the Broken Egg Challenge on dailypaintworks.com

quite a challenge indeed!
