Paint for painting in 12/th scale

Hello everybody!

So far I have used acrylic paints only for crafts projects and the paints I used were crafts or students quality. I have dabbled in other media yet shunned acrylics because I could not wrap my mind around a paint that dries so quickly and that cannot be dissolved again.

In any case... I want to paint furniture in 1/12 th scale in a folkloristic painting style. Since this is a miniature scale, I am looking for a paint that is neither too fluid nor too thick, that can be applied thinly and smoothly and still be opaque when I need it too.

I am assuming that what is true for other media is true for acrylics as well: you get what you pay for and artist grade paints outperform student grade paints.

I am not likely to use much paint. In fact, I assume I'll loose more paint to drying on the palette than to the actual painting. So while I hope I won't have to torture the piggy bank too much, the small scale should make an investment in quality colours possible.

Can somebody suggest me a brand that would fulfill my requirements? My thanks in advance.

I think that you will find liquid acrylics agreeable. A bit of explanation is needed on some colors. Most acrylics have a swatch of color over a patterned area on the tube or bottle (Golden does this on all their paints) to give an idea of the opacity of the pigment. Modern pigments tend to be transparent, earth pigments tend to be more opaque. The addition of Titanium white, even in small quantities will help with the opacity. Many come in 1 oz bottles so you won't have large quantities of paint to deal with.

I agree with Howard. If it were me I would use Liquitex Soft Body, comes in small bottles. I believe that is what it is called now, they changed the name and mine still have the old name. They are creamy but not thick, go on real smooth and cover very well. You could buy one to try just to see how you like it before investing in other colors. I have used them on ceramics and other craft projects for years.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I can get Liquitex here. I'll try a sample bottle of it, then decide to stick with it or to keep searching.
