Re: GOUACHE CORNER April/May 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Guitar Bug Step 4 -
I was fortunate tonight to find almost 3 hours to work on this & made some more progress(?).

Step 4a Holbein Artist Gouache Smalt blue, Sennelier Payne's Grey & Neutral grey watercolor & lots of whites to wash in the front of the car.

Step 4b - Mixed Holbein Acryla Gouache Lamp Black mixed with Holbein Artist Gouache Grey #3 & Sennelier Neutral Grey WC for adding the black areas.
Started the headlight with washes & fine lines of colors on the palette.

Step 4c - Still using the same colors - washed in the far side of the car.

That's it for tonight.. Still a ways to go but I think most of the difficult work is done.
C & C Always welcome.
-John

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April/May 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Ral: This painting of the surfer is wonderful. I love the wave work!

John: I'm really enjoying you WIP on Guitar Bug, and I am impressed with what I'm seeing so far! Love the color of the car, and I miss my guitar - it looked just like that.

Deborah: I'm looking forward to all of your research, as I've been doing some on my own to "try" to be a little prepared for the marine challenge.

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April/May 2012 - WIP if you want to!

I know it is the last day of May, so these may go unseen. I did a couple of plein aire small pieces in Houston last week (this week is art camp with first graders, oh my). They are a combination of watercolor and gouache. I also did one of the gulf at Galveston in my sketchbook but don't have a picture of it yet. I'll save it for the marine challenge!

Adding gouache to my travel kit was so helpful. I'm getting ready to go on my first real painting trip, so am spending a lot of time reading up on how to pack for that. I have a couple of paint boxes I'm messing around with to see if I can attach them to a tripod like a pochade. Standing on the beach holding my paint box in one hand and sketchbook balanced on my arm and stomach with an extra paintbrush in my mouth was not exactly successful. Betty

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April/May 2012 - WIP if you want to!

HI!!
Debra - Thank you again for the comments! Very appreciated! I used to have a guitar like that also but traded it for drums. hmmmm... that would be an interesting painting.

Viv - Thank you for your comments!

Bonnie - I really like the way you've painted these. Thank you for sharing the process. Excellent work!

Worked on step 5 for about 40 minutes - decided to post the updates while it dries...

Step 5a - Started with the shorts and the right leg...
Shorts White + lemon yellow (tint) for base / White + yellow ochre (tint) for shadows.
Leg - Used Chinese white watercolor as a base for indicating highlights. (Helps to blend the top layers when I add them. I don't always use this process but it does help with direction and it's easy to cover if I want to).
Midtones - Mostly Turner + Lascaux gouache + Sennelier Cad Red-Orange (tint) watercolor. (Applied very fluid application avoiding highlighted areas)
Highlights - Rowney + Maimeri gouache (sandstone / Naples Yellow / Flesh tint) tinted with white.

Step 5b - Used the same process for the left leg. The legs will be given several more layers so I'm not really concerned about color variation at this point.
Added Lascaux umber gouache very thin wash to start the shadow in the foreground.

Might be back later with another update.
C & C welcome...
-John

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April/May 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Made it in under the wire, Betty! I like them both, and appreciate seeing the steps, but the last one is WOW! It's the contrast, I think. I'm a sucker for high contrast... and I love the clean, fresh whites. Very nice!

John, you have the patience of Job! I guess part of the reason I like to paint small is because I become tired of doing the details too soon. This is really coming along nicely.

Betty: You flowers are gorgeous. I love how they pop!

John: Your detail work on this guitar bug amazes me, even the tires. I tried to play drums and darn, that is really hard. Give me a guitar anyday! Those skintones truly are looking great too! Thanks for the WIP!

Terrific work on the flowers Betty, especially the white ones.

Wonderful detail John, I feel the lipstick could be darker.

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April/May 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Yes Betty, great gardens with terrific light shining through, esp like those white flowers! Plein air artists have the most success when they are complete set up. easel with bungy cords against the wind, umbrella, etc. I personally find it to cumbersome so I paint in my beach chair sometimes with a small table to hold palette and water.

Looks like your almost finished John.

Thanks Viv, Debra

I've been meaning to start another cottage with light grey sky but couldn't pass this wave splashing in the sunset, 5 X 7

PS Deborah, it happened again, my horizon is cut in the middle and not enough paper to pull to side. Next painting might be better planned

Ral, that wave splashing in the sun is really cool! I hope I can eventually learn how to do "ocean." Well done as always!
