Direct brushwork using acrylic gesso for white and Mars Black. I used 1" and 1/2" synthetic flats. Just copied from a reproduction.

Very nice work. You should post it over in the acrylics forum as an inspiration.

Re: after El Greco....... 12" x9"

bschart, I just did a "picture talk" with my son in our homeschooling "art" session yesterday. It was a painting called "City of Toledo" by El Greco. The painting is referenced in the "Artistic Pursuits" book that I am using to teach my son art.

Awesome work on your seemingly El Greco-inspired piece.

Thanks again.
thevaliantx, I love El Greco. I hope that you and your son enjoy him as much as I do. His work will lead you to many other painters.

bschart, why is that? I don't really know anything about him, the one painting I've looked strikes me as El Greco living inside a depressing mind.

His elongated and brushy figures inspired a lot of the European expressionists (along with the work of Goya). They inspired me as well. I haven't read about his personality. I'm more interested in the paintings.
If you think El Greco is morose than watch out for Goya. A lot of the Spanish painters seemed somber.

I'll definitely check out Goya, as well as looking at more of El Greco's. I'm of the belief that an artist's work is an extension of who he or she is. The reasoning behind the work isn't always evidenced by the work.

Great work. I am amazed at how the bit of white left unfinished on the left side brings the whole piece together. Brush work is amazing. It is like an expressionist/cubist painting. Wonderfully expressive.
