Koi Palette
MY IMAGE(S):
GENERAL INFORMATION:
Title: Koi Palette
Year Created:
Medium: Oil
Surface: Canvas
Dimension: 24x36
Allow digital alterations?: Yes!
MY COMMENTS:
This is a good size painting done mostly with knife. What I worked on was "sinking" the fish into the water by the application of glazes.

Re: Koi Palette
Overall I really like it. The glazes did work, though I feel like the fish on top are above water. While the white fish is beautiful I might put a glaze on top. Then the blue highlights would truly be the top of the water perhaps...? Good job!

Re: Koi Palette
I totally agree with ccurtiss ! You need a surface with reflections and shadows on the fish ! If you were painting with acrylics, I can envision some of the shimmery, reflective paints - oh, yummy ! My imagination runneth over !!

Re: Koi Palette
I love where this is going. You are off to great start here. Like the last two poster, however, I think that you still have a bit improvement that can be done here. I think that, by doing as they suggest, you will end up with a fine painting. Great work so far though, very colorful and pretty.

Re: Koi Palette
I disagree about changing it. Love it, as is. The fish pop and are fun and vibrant, there is great contrast and the positions of the fish and highlights make a great composition. If this was a very realistic painting, then I would "fix the problem" of the white fish being maybe above the water. But this is not a completely realistic painting. It is a strong, confident, and playful painting, so it is allowed to break some rules. When I looked it it, I did not think "white fish is above surface", I only thought, "what fun, love the pattern on the white fish."

Re: Koi Palette
The white fish being out of the water is totally believable especially if the fish just under it nudged it up a bit. I love the colors and energy

Love the movement and colour. The thick paint and knife work make it vibrant. Arnie

Re: Koi Palette
Nice work
My only comment would be on the lower orange coloured fish appears to be cut off with the flat green. I know that it head is probably under the fish above but visually it looks cut off

Re: Koi Palette
I like this very much but would like to see some glazing/transparency to the white fish. It's rough texture seems off. Maybe the smaller, lower red fish could be a little darker; not the same vibrancy as the larger one, for more depth.
Very nice composition and painting!

Re: Koi Palette
They do group together that way though, and it is very characteristic, therefor although the head looks cut off, it really is just how they group I think. Though maybe the thick green paint as you say Andrew, being such a contrast and butted up against the outline of the fish is creating that perception? Maybe a very slight tinge of the lime green weed to break up the dark green triangle there would improve that little section? Otherwise, it is such a vibrant and exciting piece, almost like a collage with paint. Very striking indeed. =)) Debs.
