Re: W&N oils - best colour for rich strawberries

Daisy - Thank you that is awesome and very helpful. No they never display correct on the monitor but you can see them next to each other. which is great! Thanks so much. That cad scarlet looks a lot less pink than the bright red...

Hi Llawrence,

Thanks for the details. I have been trying to do this already. I love the glazing techniques and have been using them a lot. Glazing really makes things pop!

as the only reds i had were the cad scarlet and alzarin crimson. I put the cad scarlet down. then glazed overtop with alzarin crimson. It didn't work too well. Perhaps I just need a few more layers then??

I will still get the W&N Bright red and keep at it. I find reds quite a difficult colour to get well. They either go yellow or pink underneath and look wrong. I guess it's practice practice practice. Perhaps i should do a whole basket of strawberries until i get them right!!

I'll have another go and resist going back to apples and green pears which i find infinitely easier than red strawberries.

thanks for your advice

Sarah

Re: W&N oils - best colour for rich strawberries

I remember having a similar experience when I was about 18. I wanted
so much to paint a firey red dragon. It looked good in the beginning, but
as I put the highlights on, it somehow wound up pink. Do you have any
idea how unmanly a pink dragon looks? Very.

EDIT: I used an image editor to pick out the reds. I list them in order
from highest value to lowest. IMO you can get them all with what you
have on hand. Pre-mix the piles. Do not overlap the colors, but instead
place them beside each other and blend the edges.

sarah, have you received the bright red yet?
I consider it a top ten color, cheap yet super non cadmium performer, here it is on the left putting cad red on the right to shame, loverly ain't she :

Re: W&N oils - best colour for rich strawberries

becc, it is similar to rembrandt perm red, same pyrole but remb has another pyrole also and it makes the rembrandt just a little more orange.
Bright red pr254
Winsor red and Remb perm red pr254 and pr255
like larry seiler's only red, if i only used one red and I do a lot of times, bright red is it.

Re: W&N oils - best colour for rich strawberries

i should have balanced the color, the photo before was awful:

i can see variations in the strawb that both of those would be close to but would pick bright red for the main local color .

Re: W&N oils - best colour for rich strawberries

Sid, have been looking at your color swatch and thinking how similiar the colors look to me now you corrected..also visited blick and read the pigment info..guess it makes sense to choose the Bright red for both price and safety..that is unless you want to live a little dangerously.
Only thing I note is the bright red is a purer red than the rembr prem red as you say is slightly orangy and I do like that orange element for portraits...may not apply to strawberries.

Sarah, I look forward to seeing your painting.

Re: W&N oils - best colour for rich strawberries

I'd echo what everyone else said about the Bright Red. One of my favorite reds. I also like the Quinacridone red/rose colors. I prefer them over alizarin crimson. They make cleaner mixes and are permanent, unlike alizarin.
