Monthly CP Challenge - May 2012
Rules for the Monthly CP Challenge
1) Use one or more of the ref photos posted at the beginning of the Challenge thread. Feel free to adapt the refs to suit your creativity & imagination. Change the crop, add, subtract, combine them, etc.!
2) State which ref you are using & credit the photographer in your first post.
3) Please list the size of your piece, type of support (stonehenge, watercolor paper, colorfix, etc.), and type of pencils you are using. If you are using watersoluble pencils, please let us know if you are using them wet or dry.
4) Mixed media is ok, but because this is the cp forum, colored pencil should be the dominant medium used in your piece.
5) If you would like help along the way, please post your work as wip's (work in progress) in this thread. This is especially helpful if you're new to cp. It's always easier to change things early on! If there is something specific you want help with, Ask! What's bothering you may not be obvious to everyone else.
6) The Monthly CP Challenge threads will remain open for six months. You may post your work in the appropriate monthly challenge thread as long as it is open, even if a new challenge has begun. The current challenge will be stickied at the top of the forum.
7) There are no experts here! Some participants may have more experience with cp than others, but everyone is here to learn. Feel free to experiment, branch out, and push your boundaries. Of course, the most important thing: Have Fun!
And now the ref pics!
As always, larger versions available in the RIL if you follow the links.

Yes, I’ve used that ref before (back in 2010). Considering the discussion last month of concentrating on values to help define form and shape, it seemed like a good time to do an exercise like this. Good luck & have fun with this one-- you can peek if you need to (color version is here: http://www.wetcanvas.com/RefLib/show...p?photo=83922), but try not to. Let your own vision and sense of color steer your pencil choices. Stay focused on the values, and remember test swatches and practice bits are your best friends!
Enjoy!

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - May 2012
Fantastic choices of reference Rosemary ,
I think I will try at least one of them but I need to focus on my art exchange project first, then finishing off my eggs for last month and seeing as my purple leaves is a very similar challenge to this months challenge I wont be trying that one for a while, I have found it incredibly difficult. Part of the reason I think is because I chose colours that were not natural to the subject and so I made it even more difficult than it already was, so Good Luck to anyone who gives the challenge a go without referring to the colour version
I am going to come and look at what others achieve but I wont be trying anything until at least the second half of May. But I am tempted as I love each ref, you sure make it tough to stay away from this thread Rosemary
I am looking forward to seeing everyone else's

No worries, Ali!
It's a busy time of year for everyone (me included!)
When you finish your eggs, post them in the thread for April.

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - May 2012
I have made a start on the iris...don't know how long it will take to finish, but I am enjoying it so far.
Lovely images Rosemary...I have only done one cat before, I am tempted if there is time to try that....after all Lexycat's tutorials here.

Thankyou Lynette. I don't think I really nailed it. I wish I had centered it better but you are kind.

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - May 2012
This is the first pencil drawing I have done in a long time but it was a great
excercise. I did use my charcoal to darken the background but the rest was done in pencil.

Gale, your drawings look very nice!
I had a cat that looked just like the cat in "Looking Sweet". I am so tempted to draw him, but I would rather draw one of my beloved Smokey. This one has a cute pose, though.

Ref: Beach Rocks by catjoe
Used: mix of Prismacolor Pencils and Art Stix on 9X12 strathmore pad.
Although I really enjoyed drawing this one, I feel like I got over involved in some areas and lost sight of the big picture or something. I also feel like my sand does not look very much like sand. But, it def was a good exercise for me because I don't really know what I am doing with making different looking textures yet.

Here is my attempt at the Iris using Polychromos on Stonehenge.
Scupper, I love your pebbles you have captured the colours and made them look like I could pick them up - I would not know where to start on that picture.

Very nice Scuppers, Gale and Lady. I chose the rocks first and realized how hard they were so started on the lotus. I've not given up on the rocks and will go back to them. Your rocks are fabulous Scuppers. I love both of the Irises.

Re: Monthly CP Challenge - May 2012
Seems like irises are quite popular!!!
this is mine on Bristol Vellum 9x14 ". Started with FC polys, and then I got my new 76 piece set of C d'Arche Luminence, and had to try them out immediately, so went on top of the light layers of polys, and so far so good. there are some interesting colours in the set...haven't tried them all yet!
