Use to denote nudity/mature subject matter 'Go Figure' May/June 2012

This year seems to be flying past and it's time to move on to a New 'Go Figure' thread. The last one for March/April can be found here.

And for people new to WetCanvas or The Figure forum: Hi If you're trying to figure out what 'Go Figure' is all about, this is a place where you may discuss anything in addition to your art. This is more like a lounge area, where artists gather to have coffee or drink from the fountain, and discuss life in general before heading off towards the many individualized 'studios' aka threads where the actual creation is taking place.

The Turner prize shortlist was announced recently. Here are some details. Three video artists and an illustrator but sadly no figurative work.

Re: 'Go Figure' May/June 2012

Hi Nathan- just a question in general for everyone.
I am not happy with an empty easel. But when I have just finished a major painting requiring many hours, I sometimes feel flat and struggle to get stuck into the next project.
I know that I can have a few paintings on the go at the same time (helpful when they are oils that need to dry ready for the next stage) But if the painting requires undivided attention, then when its finished- I get the "what to do now" feelings...
Does anyone else have this ?

Re: 'Go Figure' May/June 2012

Oh, Bethany! I have the same problem. I have a drawer in my flat file just labeled "projects" where I store ideas, whether sketches or photos. I go through my drawer to see what strikes me at the moment. Frequently, however, I need to make a few small paintings or master copies to get going again. It's worst when I don't have much time to paint. That is when the idea well goes dry.

Kate and Bethany,

I agree, there is nothing worse than a blank canvas/paper for deadening the inspiration that went before.

Has anyone got any ideas on a possible group project or study to break down the spring blues? We could try a master study based on artists of a similar style, a focus on a body part, a look at certain poses or struggles, or something totally different. I've got a few ideas but I think it is best to get a group of people with similar ideas bouncing off each other.

thanks,
Nathan

Re: 'Go Figure' May/June 2012

Spring semester is over, grades are in, and I have some time to catch up on Wet Canvas. I like your ideas for a group project, Nathan. I particularly like working on parts. I haven't read in the threads I've missed yet, so I apologize if I'm late with my comment and we already have a project started.

Re: 'Go Figure' May/June 2012

Hi Kate, no you didn't miss the thread, it would be stuck to the top of the forum once started. By "parts" do you mean body parts, like the previous projects on hands and feet? Heads are probably more for the portrait forum but we could look at backs, legs or arms maybe. I was thinking more about a certain pose and looking at different approaches, both classical and modern. An alternative might be to look at the dreaded foreshortening/perspective and again look at various master works to solve the problems (or indeed ignore them entirely).

Oh! I see. Looking at a pose from different approaches such as classical and modern would be interesting. But, I'm up for any idea, really.

Maybe you could do a study of more quickly rendered heads, feet and hands, or suggestions of them? Show some examples of how masters handled such things. Given this forum is largely life drawing and painting some time limited studies might be useful. Just a thought which is obviously on my mind at the moment.

Hi Tina,

not sure if it helps with time.gesture but here is a video of 10 1 minute poses.

You'll probably have to click to go to youtube to get full screen/better quality.

Nathan -- thanks for posting up this Youtube gestures vid. I didn't know such things exist. Always good to find more references, and I'll have to try this one out soon.
