100% Chance at Poplar Forest

The National Park Service sponsored a PA competition at Thomas Jefferson's Poplar Forest, just outside Bedford VA, on April 28. The forecast was 30% chance of rain. Right after my block-in, it poured for two hours (hence the title). I finished as soon as the storm broke. This took third prize.

Oil on linen panel, 9x14.5 inches, painting knife. C&C welcome.

Your painting is very nice. I feel you caught the misty, moisty atmosphere and I love the soft colors.

Bill,

You have captured the heavy atmosphere yet the brightness of the breaking sun is apparent.
Congrats on the 3rd place win.

Steve

I like this a lot. I can't imagine anyone won higher places. I especially like the grass in the front. It's perfect.

Re: 100% Chance at Poplar Forest

Thanks, Steve and Webcat. I appreciate the feedback. The hardest part for me was the tree trunks in the middle ground poplar copse. I really overworked them.

The first and second place winners painted the building (Jefferson's retreat) at Poplar Forest in sunlight--of which there was nary a trace that day. I admire their imagination.
