Cat Portrait in WC - Xpost from WC Gallery

This is a portrait of my cat, Jake. It is 9 x 7, done on Fabriano Uno hot press. The paper was a sample piece, and my first experience with HP. Colors lifted too easily, so I had to be very care not to overwork my layers. That turned out to be fortuitous, as I have such a tendency to overwork. Too much Miskit (drawing gum) was applied initially for the whiskers, which I also tend to do. I did try to paint around them a little. I didn't want to do too much detail, as I prefer a looser look and I am not proficient enough to do so!

Special thanks to Robert (skappy), who taught the April Class on painting fur. I encourage all to check out the thread for his marvelous demonstrations and the stunning works by other Wet Canvas members. This piece was painted for that class and recently finished.

The ref photo is first, followed but the different stages of completion. C & C welcome.

Nice job! The fur looks even softer than the photo! I've never tried hot press; how did you like it by comparison?

Lovely soft effect, Joy. How did you get the light little pieces of fur to stand out once the underpainting was applied - did you lift it/them somehow (or apply gouache? looks very delicate. The eye is gorgeous - really like this painting a lot!

Joy, as watercolourist for many years, I know how difficult it is to get that lovely loose effect. Your cat is a perfect example of watercolour at it's best. Wonderful work on the eyes as well. Did you mask the whiskers? What did you use to apply the masking and get such fine lines? I used to use a toothpick of all things. Drove me nuts masking.

Thanks for the kind words. I felt the HP paper lifted too easily, but the washes came out smoothly.

On the neck and under the chin, I lifted some lights. I masked the whiskers with a toothpick, but it was still too thick when I removed it, so I painted around them. Next time I think I'll try a wax pencil as a resist for more control. The light hairs on the head (Between the eye and the ear) were applied with gouache, WN zinc white. I did learn in the monthly class that Robert (skappy) prefers Titanium White, as it is more opaque. His works are stunning!

Hi joy as I said in the watercolour forum this is very good you perfectly managed the loose and detail work

To Chammi and Joy For masking really fine line the best I found is a classical pen holder with a writting pen like we used in school I use the schmincke blue fluid [it works great doesnt smell] and i dilute it 5 percent or more and the use it like ink practice a bit before but you can get line as thin as one hair but i prefer gouache I do not like to plan too much

thanks Joy for your nice words

Robert

Beautiful work! I too love the wonderful softness you've achieved, along with the blues in the fur!

Thank you - I wanted to make the edges soft, and have more color in the painting than just grey!
