Last years favourite portrait

This is a portrait commissioned for a Christmas present. It shows on the left three grown children and on the right, their mother. It was done from available photos which were mostly wedding photos of one of the children so the clothes had to be changed and the hair was also made up for the wedding in a fashion that would not be normal so work had to be done from a variety of old photos. Of course the lighting was different in all the photos and it gave me many problems. The husband wanted it done as a surprise so nobody else had input as to clothes, hair, or pose. Sometimes we have peculiar restrictions!

These first five pictures show the progress as I move from left to right. The progress was done that way so that I could review the subjects as they progressed making notes in a scrapbook of what needed changed on the painted figures. Then I would return to make adjustments moving on to sections that would give me progress (mostly clothing or background which hadn't been decided on yet) without having to spend time studying the intricacies of facial features. As it progressed the background ended up being a backdrop from the local golf course where much time was spent by the family.

These last five show the completion as I rework colour and details, sometimes missed in the confusion of jumping from place to face! The last photo was after I thought it was completed and then had to have an ear ring added.

This is the final post with is back from the framer. It has glass and matte and is ready for Christmas! Customer was pleased and picked it up on Christmas Eve.

The details were left out at the start. The picture is 32 inches by 22 inches on gessoed masonite and done in acrylics.

Andy, thanks for the advice, I've never tried anything else. Something to consider, I had fits with these.

Carol, The husband and wife were happy but I'm not so sure about the children...I would have preferred more input from them but not possible. I think that later they may think 'I'm immortalized in that sweater or top or...'
