Smile Silk as a Painting Surface?

Last Friday I saw some beautiful, but tiny, silk paintings on my gallery walk. They were done in oil.

My question is, can silk be mounted on stretchers or on larger smooth surfaces than I saw (which are about 4" x 4") used?

The other question, of course, is if there are any recommendations about "how" to paint on silk?

Re: Silk as a Painting Surface?

Nancy, these would be lovely to see...silk is very strong and durable, but I know nothing of painting on it...

There is an artist in Dodge City who paints on leather..but she must use acrylic to do so.

Re: Silk as a Painting Surface?

see my website - click on the menu called silk - all the rest is acrylic. There is special silk dyes specifically for silk - they work like watercolors on steroids, insane bleeding and much more intense colors and saturation. Beautiful effects can be achieved with salt, other minerals, gutta (the lines that hold the bleeding)....

*Important notes - you can not just paint on them and be done. They have to be specially steamed or chemically set. Otherwise a drop of water will ruin your painting. Yes, you can stretch them just like canvas - well, sort of, I put a piece of white cotton behind the silk and then stretch the two of them together over the stretches - in large sizes.

*silks will fade, especially in direct sunlight. Sort of like a leather sofa.
*there is a forum here on WC, don't remember the title - textiles maybe, take a look.

Allison, yes, getting yourself born puts you into an awful fix with death in the offing!

I tried looking at Alternative Media and got booted out somehow. The ones I saw were oil on silk, and I think I may Google it.

Re: Silk as a Painting Surface?

I just googled it and ended up with a Wet Canvas thread for us all to learn from! Since this was way back in April 2008, please refrain from commenting in it, just have a look and make any comments here!
