Hi Evalista - so glad to have you on board - lovely to meet new friends in Oil Pastels.

You have done a fine job on this still life. Lovely rounding form and lights. Well done. Now just frame and hang it!

Re: Op Challenge May 2012

Evalisa great job. Delighted to have you join us in the oiil pastel forum.

I've been working on the "Poor Little Lamb" for two evenings. It's late, I'm tired and this is all I'm going to do to this for a day or two. I'll let it age and look at it with fresh eyes.

Mostly Sennelier Oil Pastels on 8 by 10 inch, gessoed masonite.

The imaged photographed lighter than IRL.

Lighting wasn't good for the photo and I may be able to get another one tomorrow.

Suggestions for improvement welcome.

Welcome evalista......great job on the cherries. Nice deep reds.
I love this lamb, Hal. The white fur is wonderful with all the subtle pinks and blues and the grass and shadow work well also.

Pat

Hi,

Hal, I really like your lamb. Indeed, especially that you spent him some sun and grass.

Dear Lin, Hal and Pat, also thanks for your nice comments on my cherries.

Best,
Evalisa

Thank you Evalisa, the poor little guy needed some grass to munch on.

Re: Op Challenge May 2012

Hi all,
Here's where I'm at, just greyscaling it in at the moment on terracotta colorfixed watercolor paper 8x10. I thought a fisherman fixing a net was in order so the sketch I'm using you see at moment. I'm thinking I maybe should have had him facing to sea. Hmmmmm . . .

Thanks for the inspiration and scene Lin.

Senns and Neos.

Yeah Mark, It's hard to imagine a fisherman turning his back to the sea.

Re: Op Challenge May 2012

This is a work in progress based on Lin's landscape photo with buildings (honest... really it is.)

I decided I wanted some sky, then I decided I wanted a back lit scene and of course I wanted to change the buildings and add red roofs.

There are a large number of issues to be dealt with before I decide it's a keeper or a trasher. The big tree is a disaster, the area to the right of the big tree, I smeared out last night and when my Senneliers set up a bit I'll work on the scene again.

Senneliers on 8 by 10, gessoed masonite panel.

Am I the only one who gets really depressed when I feel I've badly blown a painting. And I'm really depressed at the moment. (It's a dreary, rainy day as well which doubly compounds my depression.)

Hal- I love your drawings- especially the lamb. The soft tones you used to do its hair coat are fabulous.
Mmadsen-I like your scenery with the lonely fisherman

Re: Op Challenge May 2012

Thanks for the feedback on the cherries guys n gals, i was a bit disappointed as i had a really cool idea in my head but my skills didnt live up to my vision, more practice required methinks haha.
Great painterly effect on those cherries Evalisa,
Hal the lamb has your style written all over it, lovely texture holding it all together.
Mark I like where your seascape is going, that fisherman will make a great focal point.
Hal I know you're still working on it, but as it stands to my eye, the top of your landscape seems less successful than the bottom, you say the tree is a disaster but you know what if you crop the image in half vertically, I think you have a really great painting, the tree, the buildings everything works, you can tell the scene is back lit even without seeing any sky..... the downside is if you did crop it, then it would likely need a bespoke frame....but I think it would be a quick seller.

See what I mean, that tree you say is a disaster looks fantastic!

Thank you Tali.

Steve, great idea about the crop. It does look better without the top half of the painting.
