May 2012 Watercolor Challenge - Godshill
Here's a lovely village scene at Godshill, isle of Wight in the south of England. I took this photo on a tour several years ago and painted it in 2003.
The name 'Godshill' is said to originate from the foundations of the local church, which dates back to the 14th century, being moved from the bottom of the hill to its present location on the top of the hill on three occasions whilst it was being built. This was taken to be a sign from God that the church should be built on the hill, hence the name Godshill.
There's a larger photo in the RIL HERE.
Here's my painting 12x9:
You will note I raised the church a little.

Your painting picks a nice scene up a few notches. Really like it!

Wow...this looks like a difficult challenge. Perspective, surfaces/textures, color choices, and aerial perspective. Nothing like leaping into the fire, eh????!!!! I think this one will take awhile! gulp!

Doug, great Reference, I might give it a go
Your painting is beauty, it has a excellent colour harmony, and I admire your treatment of the foliage on the right hand tree......wonderful stuff!

What a lovely photo Doug. Such quaint cottages. A difficult perspective and the artist would have to add their own lighting/shadows; like you did. Your painting is excellent!

If you mean the restaurant on the left James, that is a traditional thatch roof which have an extra layer of protection over the ridge. If you look very carefully at the RIL photo there is also a straw kangaroo on the roof, not sure why.

Re: May 2012 Watercolor Challenge - Godshill
Here's my effort. I'm not sure this is totally legal but I used a combination of watercolor pencils along with my pan watercolor paints (totally sorry if this is not cool). It's 5.5" x 8.25" and I painted it into my drawing sketchbook, feels like about 90lb paper. You can see the buckling pretty easily, especially since I decided to take a photo rather than a scan.
I'm really pleased with the two-point perspective; painting buildings has always been a challenge.
CC's please :-)

No problem with watercolour pencils Eric.
If you look at the photograph you will see that horizontals to the right of a corner slope to the right and to the left of a corner slope to the left.
