Backyard Peonies

Had time during my lunch hour to complete a 30 minute plein air in my backyard!

Re: Backyard Peonies

Hi Laura,

I hope you don't mind, but I made a few modifications to your painting with photoshop that I think will help. If you don't want this type of advice, have one of the moderators remove my reply and I won't do it again...

When I put your painting in to gray scale (below) you can see that most of your colors are the same value. Having a greater value difference in the flowers and the background would make the flowers pop.

Also, most of the colors are the same chroma. I grayed and darkened some of the foreground colors and grayed and lightened some of the BG colors.
(below) Trying to make the flowers the "stars" of the painting.

Take care.

Glad to hear that. My mods are crude, but I think they get the idea across.
BTW - If you put C&C welcome in your text or signature, others will feel more free to add comments & crits...

Very nice! Fresh but not fussy - great use of those 30 minutes!

Thanks Donna! Limited time makes you look for the fresh and lose the detail.
