Middle Temple Gatehouse, Inns of Court

This is a magnificent gate into the Middle Temple where the lawyers have hung out in London for a thousand years or so. The words "bitten off more that he can chew" occurred to me a few times while wrestling with this. The most complicated plein air oil I have attempted so far. Three visits in all, one to draw it out but couldn't paint because the light died on me and then two more sessions of about an hour each plus a few corrections in the studio. 14in by 10in oil.

Complex is the word Rob, well worth the effort.

Oh My! I suspected you were often ambitious with your plein air (understatement), this proves it. But as an amirer of your undertakings, I stand ready to cheer you on.

Re: Middle Temple Gatehouse, Inns of Court

Thanks all! Fortunately it is only 20min from me on the train, astonishingly considering the monsoon we have been living through I got 2 good days at it. Here's another I did on the way back to the tube. I drew the main masses then put the figure in first, something I have been trying to do more as it makes the figure inhabit the place more I feel. I then made a mess of the building on the left which had to be fixed later. It only took 1/2 an hour and in many ways I prefer it to the one that took much longer.

Wow, impressive work as always! The light in both paintings is amazing and you did such incredible work with the architecture in the first one. I would find just one of the statues built into the gate to be enough of a challenge!

Holy crow!! I was moving into my new house when you posted this first one but I had to comment now. This is just fantastic!!! You are a master with buildings and always make them so interesting that I would love to stand and watch you paint them!

Genial Rob!
Bild 1 ist der Hammer in Technik und Farbe.
Vor diesen komplexen Motiven habe ich
großen Respekt, besonders in Plein air.

I admire the painterly fashion you bring to painting the facade --- especially the upper setion
