Just finished Pastel Portrait

Here is an image of my latest portrait commission of a young woman. Portrait is on Canson paper and is 18x22 unframed. Thank you for looking!

Re: Just finished Pastel Portrait

Andrew - this is lovely! great light and the drawing is excellent. The one tiny thing that I am wondering about how it is reading is her left nostril - those fleshy parts connect in a semi-circle at the bottom - and even if they don't in real life ( a deviated septum) it might be (I say might as this is opinion) to show it symmetrically like the right side.

Re: Just finished Pastel Portrait

Hi Kevin! Yes, I know exactly what you mean as I had to make a decision to either paint it like I saw it or ad lib it and make both nostrils the same. The client and I both agreed that it would be best for the overall likeness to paint it as it appeared in the photo. However, the chin is slightly skewed in the pic of the portrait but was corrected. Still haven't photographed the finished piece but am planning on doing that today for my portfolio. Thank you for your feedback.. it is much appreciated!

Re: Just finished Pastel Portrait

Andrew Kenyon, this is simply breathtaking. You have done an amazing job in making her so 3d she almost pops out of the screen.

One thing which I noticed when compared to the reference photo is her left cheek (as she faces us). There is a slight roundness to it making her a little more plump and young, whereas keeping it straight makes her look older and skinnier. I think this is a matter of millimetres.

Also, if you look at the angle of the head, there is a slight of tilt if you draw a line from the eyes. This might be too hard to correct now and you've done an amazing job and it would be a shame to alter it.

This is why I prefer to trace. At the moment it's just too much hard work to get a likeness without the use of tools.

Wow.. Thank you all SO much for the kind words about my portrait. I really appreciate it!

Dominka, here is the close up you requested. Sorry that it's a bit blurry.
