My first serious attempt

This is my first serious attempt at watercolor. Until recently I haven't painted much, just crafts. But I wanted to try painting this photo my sister took in Yellowstone. I really didn't know how to even get started. I did the dark shadows with black ink. I didn't think black watercolor would be dark enough. I thought it was an interesting picture because the foreground is in shadow and the back ground is very bright.

Any suggestions?

Re: My first serious attempt

Thank you for the encouragement!!

Do you think I should darken the cliff a little? My family thought it was birch trees.

I like the sort of graphic nature of the cliff as it is.
You could always do another one along the same line and experiment doing the cliff differently.

Re: My first serious attempt

Thank you for your kind words. I did a little sponge painting with a dark gray and a very small sea sponge. It helped it to look more like rocks and less like bark.

Re: My first serious attempt

Well, the crow was very obliging while my sister and I were trying to sneak up on it, shushing each other and tripping over rocks and holding the branches out of the way. I was surprised he didn't fly off. Maybe he liked to have his picture taken!
There were several places in Yellowstone where the cliffs had these stone pillars. I thought they were fascinating! They defy anything I ever learned about rock formation.

Re: My first serious attempt

So this is my first attempt at pastels... not counting drawing hop-scotch on the sidewalk. I use a photo by Charles A Blakeslee as a model. When I finished it yesterday I did not like it but today I think it looks pretty good. It was more fun to do than the watercolor.

I didn't have any black, rough paper so I painted a piece of old rice paper from Korea. The surface was very rough and uneven. Anyway it was fun to do.
