April Challenge!

Larry, the horse piece with the rider is really very cute with all the exaggerated proportions. Good lighting too. The deer looks very alert in your piece.

Jim, your cowboy has great contrasts. The horse looks very real.

Maria, good quick drawing of yours. Reminds me already of gun magazines.

Claude, great concept to the mountains and love how the swirl of colors are so dark and yet so distinguishable.

Here are my efforts today.

Pentalic 70 lbs 5.5x 8 inch hardbound sketchbook

Testing medium

Chinese brush and ink



Walnut ink - quickly abandoned.



Shinhan markers - looks pretty bad
Then cover it with student grade power watercolor and Stabilo Woody 3 in 1 watersoluable crayon



Then one last try -

dollar store oil pastel from China
Colorfix pastel ground

Still on Pentalic sketchbook - So glad it's only $4.99 for 220 pages. I could be so free in experimenting.



The opposite facing page of this piece also has pastel ground on. So I did one with Conte crayon. Spreaded all the colors around with felt and then Terry Ludwig soft pastel intense dark.



So the oil pastel one, I sprayed it with Sennelier oil pastel fixative and the soft pastel one, I sprayed it with Krylon.

These are great, Sandra! I especially like the third one. The snaking river is a great touch. All of them turned out really well. Great textures in those last ones.

If you haven't realized yet, I am one who doesn't like to waste things. For every sketchbook, I try my best to use every single page back and front. So when I have failure pieces as the previous post for scenery, I try to salvage it.


These are all on Pentalic 70 lb hardbound sketchbook 5.5 x 8 inch still.


This piece of Chinese brush and ink has now added General's Graphite powder and pan pastels.






This piece of walnut ink equally has General's Graphite Powder and pan pastel, plus a conte pastel pencil and the deer was done with Prismacolor pencils plus erasures with kneaded eraser.

Finally got around to doing a challenge! This is done with Mungyo and Sennelier oi pastel on UArt 800, 8.5" X 11".

Marcus - I love this!! The colors are great, and you really captured the distant feel of the Sleeping Giant on the right side background mountains. My son and I hiked a mile to the spot this photo was taken from last summer and I did a plein air painting while there. It's one of my favorite spots - thank you so much for creating something beautiful from this challenge photo!!

Thanks to everyone who played along or commented on the challenge and sketch! It was a lot of fun and I'd love to host again sometime. Feel free to use any of these photos as you like in the future. Here's the plein air I did last summer when I took the challenge photo that Sandra and Marcus (and others?) used.



I made the Sleeping Giant's boob profile a little too large in the field, so I did a "breast reduction" back in studio . here's the finished piece - again thanks to all!!
