No darlin ... not Casper. This is just a photo I phound that interested me. The eyes in the reference are not as deep as the one I drew but I don't see how anyone can go wrong drawing eyes with as much depth as possible. Thank you.

Thanks Tony ... actually I have been having some problems with the details in this. I was watching some videos by Darryl Tank (5 pencil method) and he is big on sharp pencils ... so I thought I'd give them a try. After 2 weeks of trying, I HATE sharp pencils!!!! ... !!!! So I am going back to my beloved dull tips and I will undoubtedly get better details once I do that - at least I have in the past. So we'll see ... all part of the adventure.
This was done with nearly flat tipped pencils a few years ago ...

Re: Back again ....
Ken!! Question!!!:
How do you achieve such dark values with a smooth paper?? And do you not find you get the 'slickness'??
Also, do you think bright white is best or off-white? And why? I know this is personal preference to each artist, but I thought I'd ask anyway.
Full of questions, me!

I use 4B and sometimes a bit of charcoal to get the darkest darks. As for slick .. I rather like drawing on graphite. I do not like the feel of my pencil on plain paper which is part of why I put down a solid layer of 6H or 4H first. For some blacks I grind the 4B into the paper till it's crushed and VERY smooth ... doesn't bother me though. Once the pencil begins to slide on the graphite I find I can draw better. (I"m weird .. I know ... but Katie loves me anyway ... she has taste!)

Probably the whitest paper you can find would be best for portraits of animals or humans for the simple reason that the catchlights in the eyes are usually very white. The paper sets the whitest white possible for the drawing so generally the whiter the better.
