These works, as those reproduced above, were all realized between 1944 and 1949. The artist is best known for his late 1950s and 1960s works.

After the Second World War the artist formed part of the Modern School of Paris (the new École de Paris) often referred to Tachisme, Lyrical Abstraction, the European equivalent of American abstract expressionism and those artists related to Cobra.

Re: Mm2180

Found a couple of the other images after searching a bunch of artist names associated with those schools of artists you linked to, so I know who the artist is, but can't find the mm image anywhere. Is it buried in a pdf or flash page? Looked through about 25 pages of auction results and came up empty and got tired of looking. The majority of his work doesn't look like that, just washy color fields.

Yes the file is in pdf format, sorry about that...I should have mentioned it earlier.

The occasion was a show with Simon Hantaï and Michèle Destarac. The catalogue is online.

Re: Mm2180

For those interested I just finished writing a Wikipedia article about Jean Messagier.

It's an interesting story of the artists life/work.

Jean Messagier, 1962, Juillet a Antennese, mixed media on canvas, 140 x 210 cm
