Thayer's Angel

So I am starting this project as another learning opportunity as well as to a gift for a friend colleague.

After some research I decided to lay the ground first with Winsor Newton Griffin Alkyd paint, I think it dries faster and is better than acrylic paints. So far Im just trying to brush a thin and even layer of paint. Since this is no longer digital painting the method would have to change a bit and general color block-in happens first. I skip drawing phase although it would be recommended for beginners.

Sorry that right now she looks like a redhead, but I think that is attractive too...

After a day, the alkyd paints are already dried, and now moving on to oil paints.

Progress

For this weekend everyday I wake up and rub my eyes to look again, only to be horrified to realize that my angel looks nothing like Thayer's Angel - She looked SO PERFECT last night, but the next morning every aspect of it looks SO WRONG! But not a problem, never mind, I'll jump right back into action until one day "she" will look truly like that angel... ...

Guess now is a good time to let it dry for some time again.

Hey, you have set yourself a tall order here, ha. and it looks like you will be successful! I think that anytime you set out to copy another's work you have to give yourself a little leeway. for one thing the copy you are working from maybe suspect in color and lighting the pic was taken under. to me the things that i remark a about Thayer's angel is the luminous quality of the whites and how the skin reflects that into a nearly inhuman hue of rosey beige. also the long limbed child body and head notable for their sexless form and expression. Certainly a concept from another era, ha. Let us see more.

Update : I began to use Rembrandt oil colors to cover most of the Alkyd paint layer done previously. The goal now is to match with the original as close as possible in tones and colors.

Taking on the face... Trying to get close to the original, but getting frustrated most of the time... will keep trying next time after it dries.
