Re: Moon And Night Threads

I had painted the crescent moon in the night sky surrounded by stars but it didn't seem to work so I added the surf foreground and liked it much more.
I played ouround with the horizon and it ended up being a bit surreal.

Oil on canvas about 750 x 450mm

Re: Moon And Night Threads

Jim, your borealis painting is eerie and dramatic. Chilling. I like the way it's near monochrome except for the northern lights themselves, that's what it was like the night I saw aurora borealis in New York State (though it wasn't as dramatic a display as this one.)

Chris, your surreal painting is gorgeous. I love the transparency of the moon and sea, the way it flows together that way. Everything has such clarity and focus, that's part of the dreamlike feeling. Or rather, it seems to. The intense stars are great too, closer than real like the moon is. Something in the composition knits it all together in a completely plausible way that tells me "dream or vision quest." The hint of constellation lines also suggests meaning in the pattern of the stars, magic in the moon that's crescent but also visibly round, balancing physical and spiritual ways of looking at it.

That's wonderful. I love the painting. Definitely a keeper, if I'd done it I probably wouldn't even sell it.

They are all so lovely - each in its own unique way - but one I must comment on is the watercolor depicting "lightening" - this is amazing.

Re: Moon And Night Threads

I've just looked at this upload again and it looks much too pink. In fact it is more blue in real life. The tonal values look about right though.

Mike
