Hi Everyone,
Hope you don't mind me posting here. I am starting some copies of ghirlandaio's paintings. Yes i know they are probably too advanced for my very new hobby, but I'm very interested in History and do Reenactment. Basically I wanted a copy of this painting for the Abbey Medieval Festival we have here in July. I perform with a group from 1480's so it's a pretty perfect time.
I thought I would post my attempts and see how i go. I have started with it on canvas, but still have the drawing and will do the painting again onto panel. Learning from this one i should be able to do a good job next time. I'm planning on using MDF covered in several coats of gesso

Here is the other one. ( yes it is a 4m fresco... but i want to do a largeish copy of it, (like 1 meter ) so i wanted to have a little play with a section of it. See how it translates to oil paint.
Here is my work on both so far:
Please note the portrait is only in a first underlayer. So darks not really in. I have a few things to fix. Especially the eyes although i'm happy the nose doesn't quite look like a giant sausage (My noses often do)
The other one, needs the lights put back in a little and a general tidy up. I have not put on the faces yet. As they are so small they will go in last of all i think. Considering that it is a small study to see how it goes, i'm happyish. Next time i won't make it so small. Doing my head in trying to simplify it a little. What was once big brush strokes is now the slightest line.
Despite all this i'm enjoying this enormously. How fun is it to see it emerging from the canvas. Sorry for all you folks that think i a) shouldn't copy something or b) should start smaller. I am doing smaller studies on the side just wanted to try these
I keep posting my efforts here.
In the meantime, has anyone copied this painter before and have any tips? Colour suggestions ect...
