Thanks, Lyn

Re: Basic 101: Class 17 - Hands and Feet

Hi Arnoud, Hi Arnoud. I visited the art shop yesterday and purchased some charcoal pencils so couldn't resist trying them out on the above hands. Do you think there is too much white? I am starting to really like charcoal now.
Thanks, Lyn-now for some feet!!

Yes, it is much better .

It depends. For a start, the lighting is not consistent. At the right the light is coming from a strong concentrated source at the side. This effect is very nice . But at the left it looks more as coming from a - also strong but more diffused - light at the front. Aside from the inconsistency, I think this part is too white, it (again) gives the impression of a wet or oiled skin.

Thanks Arnoud, I was wondering that when I did it. Is this better? I had trouble removing all the white so some is still showing.

The last version of the hands is very good, that is one to frame .
The right foot is also very believable. The left foot looks a bit "blocky". I think you could improve the looks of it by shading a bit more where it turns from instep to toes. Not much, but a better suggestion of the form, like you can see in this example:

Here it is. Wasn't sure exactly what you wanted but I had another attempt. What do you think, is that better?
Thanks Arnoud for all your time and patience.

Sorry, I forgot to post the ref. pictures. Here they are. [quote]

In the second picture I just tried to guess how the other foot could appear.

Thank you for your comments.

Re: Basic 101: Class 17 - Hands and Feet

Elisa - Hands are a very difficult subject, you did it already very well for your level .
If you want to study them more, here is an extended workshop. The most common error is the "sausage fingers". Don't consider the fingers as cylinders, but as boxes with rounded corners. Close your hand (make a fist) and you'll see it clearly. Another point - BTW for everything in the human figure - take care to indicate the joints. In the lower hand, only one side of the joints is identified, the phalanxes have a bit of a pear form. One particular point for this drawing: the index of the upper hand is too narrow at the end.
The (person's) right foot is not very believable: the big toe is smaller than some of the other toes, and the instep has two swellings. The inclusion of the folds suggests that you copied from a painting. But even if "it is like that in the reference", don't copy unbelievable things. If you have to explain, don't draw it like that!
These are a lot of comments, but it is a very difficult subject, many consider it even more difficult than portraiture. You did it already very well .

EDIT: I was interrupted, so I did not see your second post before submitting.

Re: Basic 101: Class 17 - Hands and Feet

Thank you for your comments, I completely agree.

I am fascinated by Durerīs drawings and donīt understand how it is possible to draw those thousands of "micro lines" without spending the whole life in a single drawing.

I tried to copy from him but without the micro lines (I would be unable to draw even one of them).

I will post hands and feet again after the lessons on portraits.

Good job, Maya . You got all the essential outlines. Of course it looks very flat, but for a sketch it is very well done .
