(WIP): Hazel Bird- UPDATE!

So it's been a LOOONG while.... (I know.) Truth be told, with all those nice comments you guys were making, I kinda' got freaked out that I would fall short of your expectations. However, over time I finished some other coloured pencil pieces and finally got the courage to continue with this piece.

What do you think? I'm still debating whether to make the background and branches darker.... Hmmm~ What do you think?

Just got to get the motivation to finish it. C & C welcomed.

Edit: Also, I forgot to ask. How do you make white feathers look fluffy? I used very light greys, but is there another way?

Perhaps a moderator would be kind enough to add "Update" to the title of this thread. Please and thank you.

Re: (WIP): Hazel Bird

this is lovely. I would make the background darker especially next to the lighter parts of the bird! To make him stand out a bit.

This is a nice piece. My first response was how sweet. I choose art for my house based on how it makes me feel. This would be something I would enjoy looking at every day. The colors are nice and you captured the bird very well. Nicely done!

Very nice piece! Soft colors come along very good together. I also would go a little bit darker with background.

Your dad's creative influence is clearly evident in this piece. With his work in mind I think you should leave the background the way you have it. Concider a bolder approach with darker values in your next piece and see which one appeals to you most.

Just going to hang out and watch this develop. Dad's is a beauty, but yours will match it in both feel and color

Hi Paris Girl

Your dad's work is just lovely. Thanks for telling us what media, as I was wondering too.

Your bg is looking so subtle, even and smooth. Can you please share what your technique was to achieve this? Solvents?

Re: (WIP): Hazel Bird

I don't have any updates yet. I'm procrastinating far too much. But I'll get it done soon, hopefully by the end of this month.

BUT. I've found who the reference picture belongs to. Dave Slaughter. He's got amazing photos of birds. Check him out via link:

Thank you everyone for the encouraging words. My dad thinks the background isn't completed, but I'm sort of leaning towards leaving it as it is.

Clydeine; Thank you for saying that. You put a smile on my face and made me very happy.

Rob; I might consider doing another piece sometime soon. But after finishing this piece, I'm going to work on something else first. It gets boring to keep staring at the same colour scheme for too long, you know.

kendell; I don't use solvents. Just a light touch of the pencil and a bristle brush to smoothen the colours out.

Re: (WIP): Hazel Bird

This is looking really lovely, i love the sunset glow you've given to the background, and the bird is looking great too. I used a very sharp white pencil to do fluffy feathers over a soft grey. Look forward to seeing this finished

Re: (WIP): Hazel Bird

The texture of the birds feathers look amazing and it isn't even completed yet!

How did you get such a nice smooth under colour for the background?

Looks amazing so far!
