'Queen of Spades Range' underpainting

Finally back in my studio after working in Zion NP for the last 9 months. This is a 24x24 gallery-wrapped canvas and the concept is based on a small 8x10 plein air piece I painted some years ago. The focus is on design...the alluvial fan and mountains in shadow falling down to a dry lake bed that will be in the sunlight and luminous [I hope]...from the Death Valley area near where I live. The 'Queen of Spades' references the major shape on the fan which will be reiterated throughout the painting...fractal patterns of nature.

Re: 'Queen of Spades Range' process

Thought I would add my process to this thread...this image gives an idea of where I am ... a little over halfway...still have to adjust colors and tweak the design and values. The color harmony is my major concern now...how to increase color interest while still giving the illusion of mountains in shadow. Back to the easel!

I am calling this finished! Of course there are always tweaks to be done...but I want to get on to the next project. BYW..*There isn't any range named the 'Queen of Spades'*... the concept came from the strong paisley patterns that are found on the alluvial slopes of desert mountains that are nearby. So here it is...24 x 24 oil on canvas.

Really nice Kate. I love this design and colors and can feel the weight and expansiveness of the mountain range. I always did like alluvial fans.

Nice. You could have quit at anyone of the stages shown and still had a finished piece. Great!
Have fun, Dave
