Special Effect Mode - please add your images
The new Nikon D5100 has a special effect mode where PRIOR TO SHOOTING, you select a certain color of something in your image (like red). And when you take the photo it will show only the red things in your photo and the rest will be black and white. I don't have a NIKON D5100 but I do have photoshop and decided to replicate the effect.
I know it is not anything revolutionary new but it was sort of fun.
I INVITE ANYONE TO ADD AN IMAGE OF YOUR OWN DEMONSTRATING THE SAME EFFECT.
Here is mine:

Good idea for a thread.
Here's a quick one - about 30 minutes of Photoshop work.

Ah yes, that is a good one Dave.
That yellow is luscious.

I will have to try this "IN CAMERA" using the D5100 so we can compare results.
I had a point-N-shoot Sony that did this but I never used it.

Oh good Dudley. I am anxious to see how it works.
Have you visited Amazon.com to see the huge amount of books written for the D5100 and how to get the most out of it.
If I bought the camera, I would have to buy couple of those books because I never taken pictures using manual mode. It sounds like you might not need any of these texts but I just thought I would share what I found.

I bought, David Busch's Nikon D5100 Guide to Digital SLR Photography. A tough read though.

Here is my Grandson with a walleye he caught on the Missouri River near Pierre, SD.
I did this in Photoshop Elements 10 that I downloaded for a 30 day trial. I have to say I am liking it a lot. I usually use CS2 but PE 10 is a lot easier to use for some things. Probably won't replace the full Photoshop but is nice to have.

OMG, that had to be so fun to catch. It had to be a good battle.
You should send him this version of the photo, I think he would like it so much.

Dave, Nice rose!
Lorell, colorful berries.
Thanks for the comment on the fish. I am in the process of making an "out-of-bounds" photo for him.

Very cool, Rich.
If you can stand another floral, here's what I did with a photo taken this morning. I'll also show the original for comparison.
Selective Color version
(You can see that I also blurred & darkened the background.)
original photo

Re: Special Effect Mode - please add your images
Nice one Dave. I like the dew drops. Years ago in the film days I always carried a small squeeze bottle of water mixed with a little glycerin to spray on flowers. Makes a big difference in the interest factor.
I have always liked the black BG for floral. Hard to do in the film days, easy now!

Re: Special Effect Mode - please add your images
I can stand another floral photo especially if it is one as good as that.
Great clarity and color.

Re: Special Effect Mode - please add your images
Well, first attempt to use the selective color feature on my D5100 was a bust. It suffered from the same issues that the magic wand does in PS. Bled over into other shade that were not wanted. PS does a much better job using the select tool and isolating the object. I tried both pre and post capture and the results were the same. I will try again and post results, but don't hold your breath.
I like these posted results much better.

Re: Special Effect Mode - please add your images
Dudley,
That is disappointing news about the special effects mode of the D5100 Nikon. It looked like a great option to have.
I did another manip on an image but first I changed the original photo to a black and white drawing. Then when I was finished doing that, I added the single color back into the photo. I kind of liked the way it turned out and here it is:
