COOCHIEMUDLO ISLAND - Queensland - Australia (Photos)

Coochiemudlo Island is a small piece of paradise that sits like a pearl in the shell of Moreton Bay. It is only 5 km in length, but 4 of those km are all beautiful soft sand beaches.. Coochiemudlo is an aboriginal name meaning red rock, or red ochre, in reference to the red cliffs on the south western side of the island. You can read a little more of the history here.

Tania, Bevan, Reece, Elise and I walked right around the Island, in a leisurely 1 hour and 40 minutes. We stopped awhiles in places to takes photos, and to play.


Walking up to the ferry on the mainland. I twas up a little that I slipped and fell. I didn't realise there were rocks under the seaweed. I made a bit of a mess of my arm, and twisted my ankle,. but I jumped up and kept walking, because I didn't want to frighten Reece anymore. He had already gone white when I fell. :-D

I was at Coochiemudlo last in 2007, I think it was, and there were rough gravel/metal roads everywhere. Not anymore, all the roads are either paved or asphalted






I gave Elise my old walking pole. At first she didn't want to carry it, but once I explained how to use it, she was walking along like an old pr. She loved it in the end.


This is the older end of the Island. Older homes, but all the homes we saw on our walk had beachfront exposure.


There were 43 steps down to the bushland.


It was a lovely little walk down there.


They only art we saw..

WOW....such tropical looking trees and scenery. What a beautiful place for a visit with the daughter and grands. I'm sorry you slipped and hurt yourself...I hope your arm heals quickly and that your twisted ankle doesn't bother you. Thank You JJ for taking the time to post this thread. Great pics JJ - what a beautiful place. I loved the photo of the old home with the cast iron balustrading. In South Africa that kind of decorative iron work is known as "broekie-lace" (broekie being the Afrikaans term for underpants ) and in Pietermaritzburg we have many old homes sporting elaborate broekie-lace. Most are built of red brick though. It was a Victorian era thing I guess. Glad you enjoyed your trip and thanks for sharing the photos.

Gill, a lot of the homes have that lacework here, as do some of the heritage buildings in the cities..
In Sydney there a re terrace houses with it, they are gorgeous!
