Addendum to my previous post re: Stillman & Birn: I have yet to try my S & B Delta, which I have high hopes of liking better than the Alpha (which has much thinner paper). The only thing I don't like is that darn spiral, which is the only way it comes. I almost filled up the Alpha with my 100 hands, so I'll be happy to move on to something new soon!

I just received 4 colors of the Kuretake Brush Writer pens from Jetpens.com, so I'll report back soon. Of course, one color would have been enough as a tester, but with 24 colors to choose from, and free shipping with 4, what's the fun in that.

I just downloaded this book, and after spending half an hour or so reading through it, it looks like it would have been useful if not for a serious error. There is one paragraph from early in the book that is repeated throughout a lot of the book instead of whatever text should be there; many sections that should be descriptions of technique in relation to a pictoral demonstration have been replaced with this paragraph. I'm guessing this mistake was only in the eBook version and not the printed version, but I hope the author makes a complaint to get it fixed, as I feel that it ruins what could have otherwise been a wonderful and helpful book.

It might be worth checking out the printed version (if there is one available) or at the very least, waiting for an updated, fixed e-version. It does have a lot of good information on materials and a few nice demos, but some of the techniques from earlier in the book might be hard to follow for a learner without the text to describe how it is done.

Have been having a read back over this thread (didn't get much time before as I had to go to work) and I love the setups some people have for their sketching supplies I thought I'd add my travelling art/sketch kit (sorry in advance if these pictures are too big):


All my goodies, numbered, are:
1. Handbag bought specifically to be stuffed with art supplies (a lot of the proper art totes etc around here are horrendously expensive)
2. Derwent Drawing 24 tin
3. Derwent Graphitint 24 tin
4. Sakura Koi 24 Colour Pocket Sketch Box
5. A4 Canson Watercolour pad
6 and 8. Various sized Moleskines
7. Eraldo de Paolo Field pad (cute, almost business card size and decent paper, what I use for just mucking around)
9. A Cigar Tin (at the moment it holds a few tubes of Winsor and Newton Watercolour, but I'm hoping to convert it to a mini pan set)
10. Derwent pencil sharpener with large and small holes
11. Clip on water cup
12. Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pens in black (three different sized fineliner nibs and a brush nib)
13. Derwent Pencil Wrap (at the moment with a selection of Inktense and Coloursofts, though this changes regularly; also greylead, eraser, blue pen)
14. Lined notepad (I'm a writer as well so I always carry one of these)

With a bit of careful arranging, all of this fits snugly into my bag, which has a few handy inner pockets:


Added here are:
15. Small watertight jar of water
16. Ebony Splendor Round Brushes
17. Ebony Splendor Bright Brushes

I don't always carry all of this with me; in fact, this is usually only when I know I can just go out and have a good bit of time to myself (which isn't often). Most of the time this bag just sits next to my couch, and I dig stuff out of it if I want to do a drawing at home. Usually when I do go out, I just carry one Moleskine, the Sakura kit and/or Derwent wrap with pencils and the PITT pens.

One day I should post a picture of my whole art supply collection; drawers and drawers of paints and pencils

Rebecca, I love seeing your supplies and sketch bag (and your colorful, striped socks! )! I see a few things we have in common (Sakura Koi, Graphitints, Inktenses, Coloursofts and Moleskines), but I don't have that awesome pencil case! I hope you will post a photo of your entire collection of supplies someday... my AMASS-ing nature is already turning green!

Speaking of AMASS-ing, S & B sketchbook fans, did you see that European Paper Co. now carries them? Coincidentally, I just got a coupon yesterday from Utrecht for 20% off $75 or more (code: WEB20), and they also carry S & B's.

I finally gave my Delta a try this morning, and I can see why this paper gets raves! I haven't been overly impressed with the Alpha paper, but the Delta is delish. I suppose that paper is just too heavy to bind with a hardbound cover... I guess I'll have to work on getting over that spiral binding.

Hi Rebecca. . . cool stuff you have. I browsed through the book and didn't notice the problem you have with it. . . I'm actually reading mine on a Kindle app on my iPad so don't know if that makes a difference. Or either maybe I just missed seeing what you noticed. Sorry yours is not what you'd hoped.

Tina, the stars are just another way of tracking how many posts you have in the forums. Don't know why they do the stars, the number of posts and an acknowledgement under your name, such as member or local legend. They are just different ways of keeping track of how many times you say something.

Yes, those are my woollen bed-socks - it's winter in Australia now and it's coooold I think I got my Derwent wrap off eBay a few years ago, fairly cheap then but I don't know if they're as easy to find now. Derwent have started making a few other carry cases for varying amounts of pencils and supplies... I don't need one... But I'll probably get one anyway

I've been dying to try out a Stillman and Birn sketchbook, but so far have been unable to find a supplier in Australia, or even anyone who will ship to Australia (I think there was one overseas supplier that would, but the cost would have been phenomenal). Hopefully they bring them out here eventually, we don't seem to have that good a range of sketchbooks etc available out here (if anyone knows of somewhere that will ship them to Australia for a reasonable price, I'm all ears)

Hi Rebecca, I'm in Melb too. I totally agree that we are really lacking in availability of good sketchbooks. I too have been hunting to try and find someone to get some S&B books from. No luck. I got the sample papers and they are so nice. Michael did hint that we might get them soon, so fingers crossed.

I really like your sketching setup too. Thank goodness for ebay.

I asked them on Twitter a while ago (2-3 months?) if they were planning to distribute them in Australia, and the person who replied said they had no plans to do so in the near future Hopefully they'll change their mind, they look like really nice sketchbooks and from what I hear the paper is lovely to draw and paint on.

Yep, that looks like it would be a good alternative for the Derwent wrap. It looks exactly the same; even the compartments and layout etc appear identical to my Derwent one. Definitely worth a look, especially if you're in Australia, where anything Derwent is ridiculously overpriced.

Your condition is not too severe....
i have a whole room in the house that contains some of my art materials... the living room and the bedroom and the car provide extra storage place...

i have almost no time at all to do everything i want (work takes up most of my day and then there is cooking, cleaning, sleeping....)

we should start an AA group (Art supply Addicts)
