Re: GOUACHE CORNER April 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Well I thought I'd better paint my own cat.

COlours are paynes grey, burnt umber, raw sienna, cobalt blue and white. The pink is DS quin rose.

The size is 10x9 Arches CP

First a sketch ...

Then a went into wet wash of quin rose watercolur over especially the ears.

Then the background which is paynes grey and cobalt blue loosely mixed .. negating a large part of the previous wash

Then start blocking in the tonal areas ... dark first then midtones, then lighter.

until the paper is well and truly broken ...

Then the fun part ... the eyes ...

And when that is finished ... the fur ... endlessly ... its easier to turn the photo and painting on the side to keep the focus. Note the semitransparent wash of gouache over the quin rose watercolour in the ears.

Until the finish for now. There are a few minor adjustments to make but they need fresh eyes.

John: Your red truck really looks great now! Isn't it fun how you can get bright colors with gouache?

Annie: What an informative, helpful WIP. Loki looks awesome and the fur is amazing! That expression says, "I'm so glad you painted me. Now what fun can I do next?"

Wow, Annie! This is the reason I lurked so long and now wish I hadn't posted my version of Loki!

Thanks to all of you for the nice comments on it though. webLes, I do like to start with the eyes. I figure if I get them right, the rest can be built around them.

There is some amazing work being done in gouache here and I'd like to learn more about working in it. Thanks for having WIPS as the project this month.

Annie, Helen, Debra & Bonnie - Thank you for the comments. They are appreciated & inspiring!

Annie - Another fantastiCat! I love how your WIP evolved & the technique for the background. I do things bass ackward most of the time & don't think about a background until I get the subject in - even when I use tinted paper I end up changing the color.

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Deborah - Beautiful Irises!

Nigel - Wow, wonderful paintings and I love the humor too!

ABA - Wonderful job of Loki!

Marilyn - Welcome Marilyn.

John - This is looking good…will be back to see it finished. Interesting comment about the background. I had an art tutor once who had an obsession about doing the background first. She used to yell at us "PUT THE BACKGROUND IN N O W!!!!! So I've always done that on any painting I've ever done - works for me.

Annie - Awwwww! Marvelous painting of Loki! I always love your work.

I don't think I'll get time to participate this month as I'm doing Roberts class - "fur on cats, dogs etc".
Making a huge mess of it so far…I can only get better…can't get any worse! We are now on to doing a cat Annie, so your painting of Loki is an inspiration to me.

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Viv - Thank You! I think painting the background first is the best way to go and I try to do it that way but i seem to always want to go back & change things.

Here's the next Olde Truck update.
Having an awful time trying to color match the scan/photo so I placed the actual painting in front of the monitor.

Only put about 45 minutes in today. Mostly just working the shadows & highlights a bit more. The truck is getting close to the cut off point (don't want to overwork) but there's more to do with the rest.
C & C Welcome -
- John

John, can't be too much more to do. The original is looking lush and wonderful.

Scans and cameras do wash out the colour a bit.

John: I think your truck was looking great at the beginning! Looks finished now with the shadows.

Vivien: I've seen your fur paintings in Robert's class and they are very good! Have fun in his class!

Re: GOUACHE CORNER April 2012 - WIP if you want to!

Thanks for your comment on Loki, artastic. John, your truck is looking really good. Vivien, thanks for your comment on Loki and I think your fur looks good in Robert's homework thread. I'm following for now and will try some of the exercises as soon as I can.

In the meantime, I usually sketch out a painting in either charcoal or pastel pencil (not brave enough to go alla prima!) but find that the gouache mixes with it and I get some mud. So, should I fix the sketch before starting to paint or do you all use something else for sketching? How do I handle painting over a sketch?
