Re: David's "Sketching Utah" thread.

Like I said in the previous post I've been pretty sick the past couple weeks. I did manage to get out sketching last Saturday for a short time at a local park with just a small sketchbook a pen, a pencil and a waterbrush. I decided to do gesture sketches of people from life, something I'd never done before;

I got frustrated trying to draw things that moved so to finished off the session I sketched this old WWII canon;

I got out to a cruise night this Wednesday night and did these two sketches, first a 1960 Pontiac Bonneville convertible in pencil;

Then a 1938 Chevy hot rod in pen and watercolor;

Hope you are feeling better David. I really like your gesture sketches, looks like you've been drawing people for years. Esp like the last one of the person with their arms crossed. Nice job on the cannon. Very cool hotrod.

Re: David's "Sketching Utah" thread.

Hi David, I hope you are feeling better, I know I've had one of the worst allergy seasons ever. I tried to leave you a message on your blog last night and it wouldn't let me. Thought you'd want to know. I planned on going to a low rider car show at the casino today but I was sick and spent the whole day asleep. Ack!

these are lovely sketches from life with a good sense of attitudes and character in the body language - you should do more of these

These are wonderful sketch, the people, the cannon and the cars. The hot rod where you blended the color from yellow to red is so cool.

Re: David's "Sketching Utah" thread.

Thanks Jaquip.

Thanks Margo. I think my problem was a major sinus infection, possibly brought on by allergies. The netti pot is currently being used at least once/day. I'm starting to wonder if my voice will ever fully recover. I don't know why you would have problems commenting on my blog, I have been getting comments from others.

Thanks Vivien. Yes, I'll definately do more of these people gesture sketches.

Thanks Debby.

Re: David's "Sketching Utah" thread.

I don't live in Murray but I live close enough that I pass through at least part of Murray nearly every day. Murray has an interesting section with old architecture still standing. I discovered a new area the other day that held some suprises. This is a lesson in not always taking the same path, to break up the routine now and then. On that day I decided to try taking a slightly different way home from running errands and the street I turned down turned out to have several gems on it that I otherwise would never have known about. I knew I had to return and sketch on that street some day, that day was today. All I know about this interesting old building is that it is now called "Murray Mansion". There was no activity there while I was sketching so when I got home a Google search turned up that it's currently being used as a reception center.

This is is pen and watercolor on Strathmore watercolor paper, about 5 x 9. I'll definately return to this spot, there are at least a couple other worthy subjects there.

David

Re: David's "Sketching Utah" thread.

Okay David I was able to comment on your blog today on this stellar piece. After I left your blog I tried to go to some other blogger sites and couldn't get in, so I imagine they were updating. Sounds like a cool little area to go back to.

Nice one - this one could be in England - it's typical of the big Victorian brick houses I pass on my way out of town to work.

Re: David's "Sketching Utah" thread.

I went for a walk today and took a brand new 5x7 Strathmore bristol smooth sketchbook with me. I bought a new one so I could leave my other one in the car. I ended up doing a pen and wash sketch of a house. It's a humble home but the way the trees frame it makes it interesting. I went right for the pen, no layout in pencil first this time.

I have a question I'd like to pose. I haven't posted this sketch on my blog because I'm wondering if it's possible to post blog updates too often. I'm wondering if maybe i shouldn't post these simpler sketches at all, or maybe just 2 or 3 of them in one post per week, (some weeks I could see myself doing 6-10 of these smaller, simpler sketches) and save the glory for the larger color sketches. What do you think?

David

Re: David's "Sketching Utah" thread.

Great job on both the colored and monotone wash houses! Sorry to hear you've been sick. A number of years back, I came down with the respiratory flu around Christmas, and had trouble getting rid of it. It became a sinus infection that I fought off and on until April of the next year! The good news is that it did go away, and I haven't had anything approaching that severity since - so hang in there.
