Re: TheValiantX's Art Journal
I don't know how much of having incorrect colors has to do with my limited knowledge of color theory, and how much of it is the tools I have at my disposal. Also, I do think I have problems telling what colors make up some things. Going up into those mountains, before the snow, is that a dark grey or a grey with a blue tint? I had trouble with the colors of the wood on the barn. I did try mixing browns with greys and blacks. At some point here I need to get out and drive around looking for scenery to sketch.

Re: TheValiantX's Art Journal
The colors you are using look fine. That's a nice looking barn. And you have to remember you are working very tiny at ATC size. If you truly are interested there is a forum here on WC dedicated to color and color theory. Now, that being said, it's not so much the color that has to read correctly, as the value of things. Is it dark enough where there are shadows? Is it light enough where there are highlights? Unless, of course, you are after hyper-realism, then both have to be correct, the value and the color.

Re: TheValiantX's Art Journal
Hi, I just found this thread. I think your sketches have improved alot over these pages. Age doesn't mean anything, whether it's drawing or ice skating. If you enjoy doing it, then that's what counts. If you continue skating and drawing then you will improve. Ask yourself if these activities are important to you and do they make you feel alive. If so then that's the only important answer. Keep on trying. Usually the first thing a kid learns in skating is how to get back up when they fall. No different for art. Experiment. Try lots of different things. Read about different techniques. Wetcanvas has good libraries in each forum. Search them. Keep drawing.
Your barn is good. As Debby said, shadows and highlights give an object more substance. So decide what side is the sun coming from. Anything facing the sunlight will be lighter and anything away from the sunlight will be darker. The barn is good, just add the finishing touches.

It's really nice to see other New England'ers in this thread.
My family and I are thinking of moving from Western Massachusetts over to near Troy, NY and I have to say that the houses in New York are just beautiful!

Nice job on the barn! That is a very famous barn with the Grand Tetons in the background. It has been photographed and painted innumerable times, and yet never gets stale as a subject.
