Stunning, stunning stunning! I love how the hair is turning out. It's really filling in the portrait nicely!

Re: The Kiss Goodbye, WIP

Hi! Coy ,

I'm new to this particular forum and tonight decided to have a wander about, lo and behold I find your thread. First let me just say how remarkable this portrait is, I think she is a gorgeous teenager and your talent is certainly showing her off beautifully.
I have never come across this medium and technique before so please forgive me my ignorant questions .
As you see it -what are the benefits of using Gold and Silver as a drawing medium?
How does it compare to using graphite -especially as you are far more limited in your range of values as far as I can tell? Although I have to say your work doesn't show any limitations.

My last question is can we have a close up shot of her hand please -it looks excellently rendered and I would love to see the detail, your foreshortening looks spot on.

Thank you for sharing your process I really appreciate being able to 'look over your shoulder'.

Ali

Hi Ali!...
Welcome to this forum...

The benefit to this medium for me, is to follow in the footsteps of Old Masters such as Leonardo, etc. who before graphite, had this medium to draw with. I think it also presents new challenges to an artist as most of this medium cannot be erased, and none of it can be blended. It also has an odd appearance viewing it live as the layers of gold and silver can be seen more subtly than in the photo of the piece. As far as this medium vs. graphite, in my opinion graphite is much more forgiving, and graphite offers a much wider range of values to achieve. I do not blend my graphite work so no difference there... I will say if you think you're ready for a challenge, try metalpoint...

To answer your last question, yes, in my next post I will also include a close up of the hand...

Coy, the hardest route is always the most rewarding. Coming along beautifully my friend, stay in there.

The Kiss Goodbye. I lost track, let's say 40 hours. Layers and layers and layers of metalpoint. I figure this will probably be my last piece before Mayfest.
