Re: April 2012 Oil Pastel Challenge
ha you didn't leave a space after your intro Paul so I thought you were signing as /grumpy lol - I assume that is the name of your fantastic fish - what type is it?
My son loved keeping tropical fish when he was younger.
He had some gouramis that grew quite large.
Grumpy is quite a handsome specimen

Re: April 2012 Oil Pastel Challenge
Thank you, Paul, for the great photo references.
First one has Portfolio watersoluable oil pastel first and I shouldn't have used it because it's too greasy. Holbein and Sennelier on top didn't register as well thereafter.
Fabriano Artist Journal 6x9 inch
This one is purely Holbein oil pastel.

Lin, I forgot about the space so it does look like i signed it grumpy Lol. maybe I'll adopt it, I'm sure some days I look just like that... lol.
Sorry I don't know what type of fish this is, all I can tell you is that I took this photo while on a visit to London zoo.
Grumpy.

Re: April 2012 Oil Pastel Challenge
Wow, Sandra you are quick. Two lovely paintings. I particularly like the owl, the eye is awesome and really sets it off.
I have never used watersoluable oil pastel before, I take it, it does not mix to well with normal oil pastels. You still made a great job of the flower.

Re: April 2012 Oil Pastel Challenge
Paul, I have used watersoluable oil pastels and found them too slick to be able to add additional layers of oil pastels over the soluables???
At the time I didn't have any Senneliers so I'm not sure how compitable they would be soluables.

Re: April 2012 Oil Pastel Challenge
Hi All,
This is Grumpy WIP. My phone camera has made it little lighter.
Any suggestion?
Cheers,
Doobi

Grumpy is loooking good. I might make the rocks behind him a little darker so that he stands out more.

Re: April 2012 Oil Pastel Challenge
Sandra, beautiful rendering of the red flower and that owl's profile. It's an interesting challenge seeing an owl in profile, he looks great!
Doobi, beautiful painting of the grumpy fish. He's well camouflaged in nature but if you darken the background as Pat suggested, he'll stand out even more.

Re: April 2012 Oil Pastel Challenge
Hi Doobi, your grumpy fish is looking great.
I've thought about doing that one with a completely abstracted background.
