New Wool Paintings

Here are some more wool paintings made with the Babylock Embellisher
felting machine. They are studies from photos and I find that it is getting easier to create them as I study painting as well. I have been using lessons from Richard Robinson from Australia and bought the DVD on Color Mastery and am slowly going through it. I feel it is valuable no matter what medium I work in.

Super and the first thing I thought when viewing them is ditto to Esther, what great painterly effects. The color theory study is paying off.

Linda, you are getting great sense of depth and gradation. How well are you finding creating layers of wool, and getting color to blend and come through?

One of the first things I learned with wool painting was that not all wool is created equal. Different types of fibers work best for different parts of the picture. Regular merino is plentiful and cheap but it has limitation e.g. it doesn't cover the background quickly and evenly. Thicker coarser wool is best for backgrounds or the underpainting. Alpaca or angora is thin and fine and works best for thin overlays or "glazing" effects. I used it as the mist on the water. Peace Fleece is very coarse and chunky but it does the best job for trees and foliage. It is limited in its color and availability but I was able to locate some in white at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival and plan to dye it in the strange greens that are needed for landscapes. I also use trilobal nylon in the water to make it sparkle. I have to dye that too because it is very hard to find and very limited in colors.

Ah ha, the variety of wool! That explains it. As yet I have worked with a limited selection so appreciate hearing which you use for what. I have had some frustration with the merino tops, and this helps -- wrong wool for the job.
