well you are NOT alone in this habit! but I have been using mine tons more lately and here's some of how/why....
the harley brown eternal truths thread.

(good guy that harley) on the last page or two he answered some of my burnign questions about sketching and made me feel so much more relaxed about it. it aint' fun if you're all twisted up over it! I have treated myself to an order of new pencils to go with those unused sketchbooks.

and last time I got new books, I got the good ones!
I have now scattered them thru the house. so what if its not 'tidy'. its not terrible, and when hubs turns the channel to some horrible show, poof, I have a sketchbook right there! fun stuff!! hehe, when anyone stops, it also makes me look like a 'real artist' lol!
I am using them much more loosely now as well. if its a 5 sec. sketch of the dog, eh? who cares, doesn't have to be finished. (but hubs and his remote seldom move before I'm ready, hahah!) make a note. stick in a saying here and there. I came home from riding last night and sketched what I saw (and wished I had a camera, but with this sketch and other ref. shots, I might be able to pull it off anyhow!)
harley suggested using one soft pencil, so instead of a pile of them, one pencil, one s.book, one eraser, easy peasy. some are more finished, some are barely a few scribbles. and even if I don't get to the easel, at least I got to sketch. and its so FUN!
