Vic, entries for the BP Portrait Award 2012 are now closed but that could be entered in next year's competition.

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012
This is what I've been up to:
This is the latest incarnation of my self-portrait. A few weeks ago, I started with a charcoal sketch on this 12 x 16 canvas. Then I went over the charcoal with pastels, a medium I know next to nothing about--wanted the practice. Then I brushed off the pastels, sealed the canvas, and painted over the drawing in oils. I did all of these steps, (charcoal, pastel, oils) while using a mirror. After I thought it was finished, I moved the hair line, shortened the nose, darkened the lash line, warmed the cheek color, curled the smile, enlarged the neck, greyed the eyes, and deepend the dimple! Is a painting ever done?! One of my painting buddies asked me why I did a self portrait. I replied that I learned so much more from painting from life--and I can't get my hubby to sit still that long!

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012
Thanks everyone for encouraging comments. Some lovely work posted here on this thread
Raeburn - agree about neck. I've done four paintings over past 2 years (slow, I know) http://flic.kr/p/bzB8zi
Kevin - no training, but I've done a lot of close-up studying at the BP portrait prize exhibition. Ian Cumberland is my hero - if only I could paint like him.

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012
Love the blond girl - especially the mouth, and the young couple - has the Bollywood poster look. Just completed one of my daughter, and posted a time lapse video of my method. Open to critique, as I'm new to this.

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012
Greetings! My name is Spencer and I'm new to the Portraiture forum. I usually hang my hat in the Acrylics forum. Here is my first portrait. The subject is my wife. It was for a show we were in called "Phantom". She played the phantom's mother and they needed a portrait of her. So I took on the challenge. It's not quite finished and I can't quite put my finger on where it needs improvement. C & C welcome! Thanks in advance!

Re: Portrait Gallery-Feb-March 2012
Vik, your work, it is amazing. So amazing it's hard actually to believe you're new at this. If so, then how did you learn? Please share. I am a novice, been doing art for about 5 months on and off, but I can see your level is extremely high. Probably the finest I've ever seen on this website.
So please please please share share share. That's what this site is about. We're here to learn off people like you, I wouldn't even know how to criticise your work.
