Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
A new book just being printed.
Hope you all are still following thread over in book club forum where Harley is still talking. Some great stuff there.
Here is link to last page of thread where Harley talks about new book with Terpning. Its probably easier to start at last page of thread and read it in reverse.
Enjoy!

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
Ron - thanks so much for that link. Here's a link to the Terpning book:
http://www.greenwichworkshop.com/ter...ibute/book.asp
Click on the 'Look Inside' button and you can view the entire book!
Best to check this out now as there's no guarantee how long the publisher will leave this up.

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
Many thanks for your advance good reviews.
As mentioned, I'm on the video (still in progress,) for a few seconds...unless I end up on the "cutting room floor." Oscar time!
And I appreciate your placing the link.
What Howard says and will show on video are enormously important. This is a first where he holds back little.
As I've said here, Howard is a hero of mine since I saw his first painting half a century ago. A knockout! The next one I saw was while I attended art school in London, with a particular image that hasn't left my mind. Now we'll see how he does it.

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
It was such a pleasure to see so many pieces of works of Howard Terpning in one sitting and the accompanying text.
Harley, I have managed to finally buy your Eternal Truth book yesterday and am looking forward to studying every word of it when it comes. Your soft pastel works are stunning! It has very colorful backgrounds and the model all have very engaging expressions.

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
Glad the "Eternal Truths" book will be used.
It's loaded with good stuff. Things I learned from so many sources including many years of "trial and error."
The Terpning book will have it's own unique twists and turns. Howard and I went over more than a hundred of his paintings. He talked about some of the troubles in pulling each piece together. But essentially he told the "secrets" of what leads a good painting into the great.
For instance one figure had to be repainted three times. That's because it wasn't positioned "just right" the first two attempts. Wiped out and redone! That fussing is typical. Remarkable revelations are discussed how a painting is dramatically designed; extremely rare and brilliant "eye openers."

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
What really hit me flipping through the new book online was how well crafted the compositions are. I have a Terpning book and have loved his work for years but seeing those paintings kind of small on my computer, I realized that every painting one was a gem in terms of composition.
I thought I had all the books I needed until now.
Harley, your Eternal Truths book is the best. Easy to understand (meaning you have lots of photos of paintings to explain what the text means) yet contains everything you need to know.

Shop around for your pre-orders; Amazon has it for $54 instead of $85. It'll probably go down more before the August 2012 release (but don't quote me on that). What a wonderfull collection with essays--a double gain. Thanks for the link, Ron!

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
Harley- Spent some time the other day going through the book online. Great paintings to enjoy and great info to go along with them. Thanks to the publisher for that, and thanks to you as well. I plan on buying the book. Enjoyed your article in last issue of International Artist magazine as well. I will be buying these regularly (along with my pastel journal magazine). Thanks for your "talks" over in book club forum. I am addicted to that thread.
Lisa- wonderful to have caliber of artist like Harley give his time here on Wet Canvas. All the thanks goes to Harley.

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
I'm extra delighted you are all getting something from the book online. Besides it having those great paintings, over 120, it is also a massive, one of a kind, art seminar. We take it in where we can find it, and this book is a classic. Yes, I'm involved with this Howard Terpning publication and proud of it.

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning

HERE'S THE FULL IMAGE OF HOWARD TERPNING'S BOOK COVER.
ALSO I'M INCLUDING THE SECOND PARAGRAPH OF MY DESCRIPTION OF THIS PAINTING:
"THE BACKGROUND BEGAN WITH LARGE SWATCHES OF PURE WHITE FROM HOWARD'S PALLET KNIFE. ONCE THIS DRIED, THE HIDE COLOR WAS PAINTED INTO IT, AND THEN LIGHTLY WIPED OFF, SO THAT IT WOULD REMAIN IN THE CREVICES OF THE WHITE PAINT. THIS GAVE THE EFFECT OF THE HIDE, AND SOME OF THE FIGURES ON IT, BLENDING INTO THE BACKGROUND."

Re: Harley Brown book with Howard Terpning
Very inspiring. I sit and look at this for a long time, looking and studying. The nuggut of technical info about the painting is invaluable. Thanks for sharing this with us.
