When I took the photographs of this little boy in preparation for this painting, he had on a green t-shirt over his black turtleneck. I asked him if green was his favorite color. He replied yes, but that purple was his second favorite color.

So last week, when I was working on this painting, I tried to be true and give him a green t-shirt. But I was not happy with the painting, so I just painted over it. It wasn't just the shirt; I wasn't happy with his skin tones, and the more I messed with it, the more the drawing got off.

Today when I started over, I started on a new canvas. And I obviously decided to change the t-shirt color!

Although it's not a commission for his parents (it's another in my series of children reading), I do hope his Mother likes it.

I think all your hard work has paid off with this- well done for keeping on with it until you got it working! I love the concept- and it reads accurately.

Congratulations for staying with it, and resolving those issues! It will be a nice series.

Good things in the head with your drawing and color variations. The sense of light from the window would be boosted with lighter values on that side- refining the hands to the level of the head would be a plus. The area below his left hand is vague- some simple structure/clarification there would support his pose.

Bethany, Ken, and Carol--Thank you. When I started painting about five years ago, I learned that nothing should be sacred. And if it isn't working, I shouldn't continue laboring over it. That's why I felt it important to start completely anew. I knew I could do better than what I had on the original canvas.
