DS Watercolor Sticks

Hi All,

Let's try this again! For the past few months, I have been using my DS Watercolor sticks as pan watercolor and not really taking advantage of the drawing capability. Today, I decided to use them in a more immediate form and it was a blast!

Consider this a WC sketch as it really has some glaring flaws, but there is much goodness in being able to draw a line with the WC Sticks!

Enjoy! Have a good week!

I love this one. great color, compostion, etc. Looks like the DS sticks perform quite well. It sounds like they are worth trying.

Excellent, Linda!

Q: Was the paper wet or damp or dry when you drew the initial lines? Did you then create the washy look with a brush? Sequence please!

Jan

Re: DS Watercolor Sticks

Hi Jan, the sky and water part of the paper was damp. The lower part was dry. The I took my squirt bottle and sprayed it. Moved it around a little with a brush. I'm going to try a few more. Will keep you posted.

Thanks all for your comments. This is very exciting.

Very lively and gorgeous! I like the way you kept it so spare and elegant, with washes combined with linear marks. You're giving me inspiration. I have quite a few of those and love them but like you I've mostly used mine as if they were pans, especially with a water brush.

very nice and spontanious, I use mine as pans most of the time with a wet brush (I use my inktense blocks the same way, as pans)

Re: DS Watercolor Sticks

One of my buddies at work needs a painting, so I am working on one for him!
It is an 11 x 14 with DS Watercolor sticks. It's a painting of Mt. Rainier, so it is fitting that I paint it with Seattle's own DS.

I will finish the watercolor part sometime this week, but will probably have to do the flowers in the foreground with gouache!

Happy Week!

PS> I took the picture after the sun went down, the photo is a little bit darker than in real life. Once finished will take a better picture.

Re: DS Watercolor Sticks

very nice vibrant colors! What's the texture of the ds watercolor sticks like? Can you compare them to watercolor pencils?

Re: DS Watercolor Sticks

It is very difficult to describe the texture, it's nothing like a watercolor pencil, or even a watercolor crayon. They are softer than Neocolors, but harder than Lyras. I live in Michigan, and it is cold here, so they don't melt. I like to wet them, just a bit, then draw with the bottom edge. To cover big areas, I just use the top like a crayon. I put more trees in the mt. Rainier painting, but did not get a picture. Will post tomorrow. Thanks for the interest!

Re: DS Watercolor Sticks

Hi All,

Added more detail, added some trees (one is leaning a bit, but will fix that) Need to add the cabin, few more trees and flowers. Only Watercolor sticks have been used!

PS> shows up really dark in this post. Will try to take a good picture in the light tomorrow...

Have a great night!
