Campanaro Crew- Revised Portrait

Hello my friends,
Sorry to have been so preoccupied lately, but have been so busy trying to work on this special portrait.
This is our Best friends Children, First done of the son and wife with both sisters(one of which is our God Daughter).
I did this portrait for them in Jan 2010, well since then their son became divorced and the portrait unhung at home.. So I told them I'd paint out the X and paint in MOM.. shame not enough room for Dad too!
So finaly got it back from our friends and got around to working on it.

Reference photos:

Composite of the 4 including the "X" which I used as reference in 2010:

Original painting done in Jan 2010,(omg how I see now so many things I need to change!!)

Start at revising the painting by Removing the "X" with rubbing alcohol,
which removed the non removable varnish and the acrylic,
right down to my sketch, which is sealed with graphite fixative.

Used Titanium white rather then Gesso as I was anxious to get started on the sketch of Mom(rough edges sanded some first,
Hindsight I should have used gesso as there were alot of irregularities in the surface, but I made it work. X is now Gone for good!!!

Sketched in MOM:

Underpainting of Mom:

Updte one- added color to the others which is much needed,
guess 2 more years of painting practice does that to you!
added color to the all black clothing too.

Update 2: alot more color, sorry photo makes them look alot darker then are realy.

Update 3:
Alot of work on Mom and little on the Son.

MORE AND FINAL on next post!!!!!!! ------->

Re: Campanaro Crew- Revised Portrait

Update 4:
A lot of work on Son and his Sisters hair and foreground clothing

Update 5:
A lot done on both sisters hair and skintones..
also attempting to make Mom's neck look slimmer
as she has lost some more weight since this photo was taken of her.
Leaving out as many wrinkles as possible, WHAT ARE FRIENDS FOR??

Update 6:
worked a lot on Mom's hair and finishing up on the girls.
Still need to fix mom's eyes and tweek here and there on the rest.
Thinking of adjusting the background now too, which I should have done first!
truly isnt as blue as in the photograph, more blue/gray

ENJOY!!!
FINAL PAINTIng!!!
Yeah I was brave and attempted at redoing the background too...
More true color, sorry the photo is too lightg.. darks are much darker
in reality, especially around the clothing and hair.
so hard to photograph black, if I darkened it too much then the skintones are too orangy and red.

Well Kathy you did a fine job removing the interloper. Two probs I see with this, his left shoulder looks stunted and why is mum looking up when the rest in the painting look directly at you?

Re: Campanaro Crew- Revised Portrait

Thanks Carol, It was indeed a challenge to undertake removing and adding,
Mom is a tad bit too close to son and therefore lose his shoulder by her.. should have put it more infront of her,
But Mom's eyes are , I think looking forward(Pupils down against the lower lids).. its probably the highlights on them thats throwing it off I think.
Thanks for the comment though, I appreciate it.

I would have added more highlights in the hair, when the teeth are that
bright... the light is there and available for brighter highlights.

Yep great job Kathie I did nt know you can remove acrylic with alcohol I m a beginer with the medium yep as Carol said the mother seems to look more on her left side and the other at the viewer maybe just moving her right iris a bit to the left will fix it?

I did a simulation in psd so you can judge hope you do not mind

Re: Campanaro Crew- Revised Portrait

Oz, Thanks, I thought about it but both their hair is VERY Dark almost black, with very little color.. so I didnt want to make it look too bright.
Unfortunately this isn't a good photo of the painting, its too pale, the black are too gray.
Robert, Thank you kindly, unfortunately I cannot make changes now. I appreciate your time you took to work on it for me.
Anne, THANKS! I am for sure glad to be finished this one.. been working on it over two weeks. I just about redid all of them not just adding mom.

Re: Campanaro Crew- Revised Portrait

I think you did an amazing job Kathie - considering all the elements already there from 2 years ago - it's not a job I'd like to have tackled!

While I agree with all the above crits, also appreciate it's too late to change now.

I think, for the future, when (if!) doing a composite, really consider the physical space four people would occupy - how they'd fit side by side and in front of .......... your two front people for instance, Mom looks larger than son and so her body should be in front of his, just as her head overlaps his

And use artistic licence to add highlights so that you have contrasts to make one person stand out from another where they overlap - just as you would if painting a still life!

Still, you've done so well! Bravo!

as everyone else said already ... not a job I would have fancied
No critique from me. If your friends are pleased than you know you did well and I just know they will love it

Kathie, I watched some of this develop in the What's on Your Easel thread but seeing it here in detail and chronological order really helps see your process. As an acrylic newbie, I learned a lot just reading through this. Thank you for posting it!

Your finished painting is lovely and I'm sure the family will cherish it for years to come!

Re: Campanaro Crew- Revised Portrait

Hi Kathie, The improvement in your work over the past two years has been phenomenal and this truly shows it. Just to have the confidence that you can pull off such an onerous task such as this one is impressive... but you've done remarkably well. Not only have you melded mom in seamlessly, you have also improved on all of the figures. And you have achieved very close likenesses. Yes, there are some minor issues and the composition probably isn't one that you would choose were you to be starting from scratch today, but given the parameters around which you have had to work, I think this is an amazing accomplishment. I have no doubt that the recipients will be equally impressed!

Re: Campanaro Crew- Revised Portrait

THANK YOU VERY MUCH Maureen, Kathrin, Judy and Coralie!!
I do so really appreciate all the wonderful comments and suggestions!

It was Recieved More then greatly today by our Best friends and all their friends at the bridal shower for my God Daughter( top right).
THEY LOVED IT!!!
I am so thoroughly pleased and glad to be done with it too!!

Hindsight, I do see about the two folks in the bottom, mom and son,
but when started two yrs ago, didnt realize son had little room when the composite of all of the photos put together.. unfotunately the way the X Wife was situated it put him off center and Filling in the X's space with Mom did make it a bit off... afterwords I realized I probably should have taken the one shoulder of the son.. off the edge of the canvas. Oh well, its the faces they are more interested in.. glad they aren't that familiar with Art to notice those little differences!!!

THANKS AGAIN ALL!!
